The Sorry Tale of Fox and Bear is the story of a cruel falling-out between two friends: how it happens, and what happens next. It is outrageous, passionate and poignant, and the bittersweet ending is as ambiguous as any friendship in real life. Framed in the present and told in alternating past and present tense, The Sorry Tale of Fox and Bear borrows characters and events from several traditional sources and is told with wit and verve by Margrete Lamond, with darkly brooding charcoal illustrations by acclaimed artist Heather Vallance. This beautiful story collection - a modern twist on traditional style - will resonate with readers looking for a great story to read over and over again.

This book is an absolute delight. I love the illustrations and I love the story. I love that friendship prevails against the odds - that it is ok to want to be friends under such circumstances. My heart went out for Bear when he was tricked. I felt very cross with Fox. You could see what was going to happen but were powerless to stop it. The end, with the sustaining friendship, was lovely.  This book will be lovely to share with children - particularly with children who have fallen out but value their friendship - it will help find that thread of friendship again. A lovely story and the artwork is really inspiring.

This book screams "modern classic", it is beautifully bound, has gorgeous illustrations and is a humourous and clever retelling of the classic tale of Fox and Bear. Addie loved reading the story out loud, the character of Bear was our favourite and it was easy to relate to his struggles and confusion regarding his friendship with Fox. As a 34 year old women even I felt like I learned something about friendship from this story so the morals are strong and effective. Addie had lots of ideas and questions after reading. A sign of a great story. A new favourite for us.

This is one of my all time favourite books. It's a stunning book to hold and look at and it didn't dissapoint. This book should be read aloud and in one sitting. I read this book to my 9 year old son. The book is a letter from Bear to his friend Fox. We discover that their friendship perhaps wasn't all roses, in fact Fox did things that were truly mean. Fox hurts Bear so much that their friendship is truly broken. Bear tells Fox that he too has done things he's ashamed of. Despite this there is forgiveness and the two become best friends again. My son and i talked a lot about friendship after reading this book. His favourite part of the book without hesitation are the illustrations. They are truly outstanding. They almost come out of the paged. My son has been inspired to pick up his pencils and draw bears and foxes.

Great  book about friendships. I liked how this friendship didn't fit the stereotypical type of friendship but  explored  how  friendships can differ and what people want from these relationships can also be different. It explores opinions of others and allows discussion for whether Bear should listen and agree with the other animals. This book did make me 'sit up in my seat' as  I worried  about  Fox when Bear played a trick on him. I wasn't sure what was going to happen and this is brilliant start point for  discussion with children! Great book will definitely be sharing with my class!

This book tells the truth of how, when a friendship breaks down, everyone is sad. It tells of the others around who want in on the friend and how they try to do it through mockery. It tells of the heartbreak and upset that your friend is no longer there to support you, and the way that you miss them deeply, even if they did play lots of tricks on you. It's a tale that could be used so easily to resolve troubled friendships and a fantastic story that could be used for SMSC. I loved reading this book.

It tells the truth in a way that could only be done with animals.

Oh, and the simple, sketched illustrations are fantastic and add a whole other element to the story. It's beautifully presented as something between a picture book and a chapter book, such a lovely story.

This book arrived with a TOPPSTA giveaway and I'm so pleased we were given the opportunity to discover and therefore treasure this book.

This is wonderfully nostalgic book - touching and beautifully written. It tells a delightful story about friendship, love and longing.
The main characters are so believable that the ups and downs throughout keep you wanting to read on.
Told from the perspective of a bear it was easy to relate to his struggles and confusion regarding his relationship with a fox.

This is an absolutely wonderful book - completely absorbing. It makes you laugh and cry and also makes you see friendship in a new way. Marvellous!

I read this to my 7 year old daughter who loved the illustrations but found the message hard to grasp. She was a little bit disturbed by how horrible the characters were to each other and I needed to explain it to her at the end. I think I will read it my year 6 class who will also love the illustrations but I also hope that it might help them to be nicer to each other. It has a lovely feel as a hard back book and it is truly beautiful. It is a book that you will love to hug.

Beautiful and charming, keepsake book. Lovely hardback edition of a touching story written as a letter from bear to fox. Having been tricked and fooled by fox on many occasions he is cross with him and tries to explain his feelings.
Just as importantly, the accompanying pencil drawings of the animals expressing their disappointment, amusement and in the midst of their games with each other.
Heartwarming story of friendship suitable for all children and a definite keeper for the book shelves.

This is a beautiful hardback book with vivid pencil animal drawings that almost appear alive, and which are full of character and movement. The story is an unusual and ambiguous tale of a friendship between Fox and Bear that is put under much strain by the painful - and mean? - pranks that Fox plays on Bear. Eventually the friendship breaks. Is there a way for it to be fixed? With Hare and Rooster, both vying to be Bears new best friend, he does not need to be lonely. But do they appeal in the same way that Fox does? I think this is an interesting book about what friendship is, and the possibility of forgiveness towards those that aren't not kind to you. This books provides a good starting point for discussing the complexities of friendship, and leaves it open ended with no clear, precise answers.

The publishers sent this book beautifully gift wrapped, sealed with a lovely sticker of fox and bear. The book itself is an absolutely gorgeous hardback (complete with handy attached ribbon book marker) and would make a great gift for a child. The illustrations appear to be simple sketches, but they show great skill, in that the animals almost appear alive. My son was not as taken by the book as I was and didn't really understand why Bear would be friends again with Fox, especially after being tricked by him into losing his tail early on in the book. I wasn't too sure myself about that. However, the ending is ambiguous. So the reader is left questioning what really happens between the two. A story to be revisited and thought about some more. A rather useful book when real life friendships go wrong.

I loved the illustrations in this book, they were very skilfully drawn and helped to tell the story of the fox and the bear. I thought this was a lovely book to help children understand the complexities of friendships and how even good friends can be unkind at times.
