This wonderfully insightful and brilliantly illustrated book on gardens and gardeners will provide hours of absorbing fun while introducing young readers to the joys of planning, planting, and harvesting. In vibrant watercolors Vincent Grave shows us how there's something happening every month in the Big Garden. Renowned landscape designer Gilles Clement's lyrical text gently teaches young readers not only what's involved in planning a garden, but how plants, insects, and humans interact all year long to make the garden thrive. Along the way, we witness a forest of mushrooms, the miracle of eggs, and the incredible universe found in a single flower. In every picture, tiny gardeners busy themselves among the leaves, seeds, and earth. Fascinating, heartfelt, and elegantly produced, this book celebrates the deep connection between humans and nature.

Wow, what an amazing book, not what we were expecting at all! I thought it would be a standard picture book format with nice illustrations about children gardening. It is so much more than that - and it is HUGE! Each spread has is devoted to a different month and so many different topics are covered: gardening, history, biology, botany, geography, the environment, seasons. The language is quite poetic and can be quite sophisticated in places (great for learning new words) but the book can be enjoyed on many levels. For example, younger children may enjoy the search and find aspect for each month. Really beautiful book, would make a fantastic gift.

Wow.
What can I say about this beautiful, wonderful book? It is absolutely delightful in every way.
Oversized with gorgeous illustrations like art that will have your children noticing things and pointing stuff out until you can take no more, this is part art, part book and something worth treasuring forever. It'd make a fantastic, special gift.

Each page represents a month in the world of the garden and the gardener, and rather than 'dumbing down', it is packed with real facts about growing plants and flowers.

Everything about the book is a feast for the eyes - from the font to the detailed illustrations.

Really lovely to keep and read, and to inspire discussion about the natural world. We're loving it at the moment as it ties in with our youngest son's term topic on the 'Global Garden'.

Wow! This is a simply stunning book and is unlike any other that I have seen. As other reviewers have noted it is a large book and not really the 'guide to gardening for children' that I expected.  Instead it is a book that combines deeply imaginative, fantastical and engaging illustrations that implore you to stare and stare and stare at them. Each has so much detail, depth and whimsical humour that I can imagine my children will spend many hours looking at them - and discovering something new each time.  The text combines poetical language with details of the gardening year, casually dropping in detailed facts, words and scientist explanations about plants.  This is, in my mind, a perfect way to learn for children (who are sponges when it comes to new facts).  It also keeps it interesting and informative for the grown up reading the book with them (I have certainly learnt a few new things from this book). It really is a perfect combination of art, literature and science, a truly renaissance book for the young child who wants to learn about plants.

This book is absolutely stunning! It's a huge hard back book, with beautifully illustratred pages, that take you through the months of gardening. It's a fantastic introduction for young gardners, I've also learned a lot from the informative text. It also has a 'wheres wally' style question on each page, allowing you to really study the picture. I honestly can't rate this book highly enough.

The large size of this book instantly grabs your attention and perfectly accommodates the stunning illustrations. The book follows a year in the Big Garden, with each page dedicated to a month. There are also questions about things to look out for in the pictures, which my daughter really enjoyed. It is a very informative book, with so much to look at and gives great opportunity for discussion about nature, the seasons, animals and gardening.

This is a large hardback colour illustrated book. One side of the page is full of text, on other side are the most amazingly detailed illustrations. The illustrations are absolutely beautifully and you could sent hours just looking at them. I was more attracted to this book than my son was though. It wasn't what either of us was really expecting having read the brief blurb about the book. I was expecting more of an informative guide on gardening for older primary children. This is more of 'picture book' probably more suited to preschool and younger primary aged children. It looks at each month and gives a simplistic outline of what is happening in 'gardens' and the tasks of the gardener at that time. There are lots of things to spot in the illustrations. An excellent book, but my son would have probably appreciated it more when he was younger.

This is a lovely big hard backed book with beautiful illustrations and lots to look at and find on each page.

The book is very different to what I was expecting as I was expecting a book that would help guide what to plant when and what to harvest when for a keen young gardener, this book doesn't provide this. It has lovely text on a page per month about garden life and looks at things from a different perspective such as through a rabbits eyes or insects perspective.

My Son particularly liked the illustrations and enjoyed the text but not sure it is something we will refer to frequently.
