Lots of reviews talked about the not liking the ghost trying to wake up the sleeping child. This did not bother my own 4 year old or any of the 4 year olds in my class. The illustrations are fun and if you use silly voices and sound effects, they become the story. We love it! I only wish my LydiaLou slept that well!!

I read it to Nursery Group aged 2 to 3

One of the children in our nursery brought this book in to share with the group. I had my reservations because of the ghost in the story, but gave it a go as the child was desperate for me to read it. I didn’t really like the idea of the ghost standing next to the child’s bed trying to make her scream, however the illustration of the ghost was fun, and I made sure I used silly sounds for the ghost to make the children laugh. The rhyming is good, and great for children to join in with, and their are opportunities to add more funny sounds with each character introduced, and by the end of the story the children were all laughing and smiling. Not my favourite as a group read, but great for children who like “spooky” things, and brave of Julia Donaldson to try pushing the boundaries of the content of stories for this generation. After all the versions of fairy tales we were read when young were much more gruesome.
