Loved this book, it’s a book about a child evacuee. It tells the story of a home life that is quite sad and difficult and then being moved due to the war to live with a man who doesn’t really want him, it about how he melts that man’s harshness and they have a beautiful friendship. I like how the book shows people can change and that friendships can grow in unusual places. I would recommend this book for older children as it is quite sad in places.

This is such a lovely story. It follows a boy called Willie who is a child refugee in world war two. He is put in the care of a man called Tom. They develop a really lovely relationship and Willie really thrives in Tom's care after been treated very badly by his mother. Things take a dark turn when Willie has to go back to London. I felt really sad for Willies character throughout this book and really wanted him to have a happy life. I learned some new things about the war and about the children who were sent to the countryside so they were safe from harm. A great book I would really recommend.

I liked this book because it was a great story that helped me get a taste of how it was back during the Blitz and how children live changed from being transported to a different home. This book was heart touching to see how a nine-year-olds terrible and unsafe conditions changes after being taken to Tom. Tom was a kind man that really helps the story be as touching as it was and he is my favourite character in this book and he is extremely inspiring.

I read this story and at first I did not like the sound of Mr Tom as i thought he was going to be mean to Willie all along. But then i discovered that mr Tom was kind and caring and made me want to have him as a friend. Also he sounds like my 83 grand father who can still climb a tree. I loved the story as it was very moving and well written

A heartwarming story about a blossoming relationship between an evacuee from war-torn London - who has been ill treated - and his new guardian Mr Tom. I loved how you could quickly forge an attachment to both William and Mr Tom. Having read this to my Year 6 Class (roughly the same age as William) they were protective over his character throughout and felt a great dal of empathy towards him. The text deals with difficult issues really delicately. There are incredibly powerful chapters throughout that provoked a lot of discussion. Michelle Magorian's attention to detail is second to none. She is able to effectively show how characters are feeling through their actions and mannerisms beautifully.
My all time favourite book!

An amazing book with lots of emotion and feelings. A great book about an evacuee called Will who comes from London to the countryside during World War Two. He's been badly treated so it's up to Tom to take care of him and teach him there are good people and things. Hopefully Will will find happiness soon! Read on! I recommend this book for 9 years plus.

Set in the backdrop of war in the countryside, this book classifies as a modern classic. Once I started to read the book, I simply could not put it down. The book portrays the bond between a lonely, reclusive man and a derelict, malnourished child. Eventually, both the man and the destitute boy benefit from their relationship with each other. I would recommend it for children aged 9 years plus because of the themes.

Such a good story sad and heart warming in equal measures. It was very real and deeply moving, this surprised me as I didn't expect this from a book that I thought was just for children.
It was gritty and mature and dealt with some difficult issues sensitively.
The war time era was well depicted. The characters were warm and really came to life.
So glad that william found someone to give him the love and security every child should have. Mr Tom is such a wonderful man.
Highly recommend this book to anyone over 10 years. Be warned it will probably make you cry.

Crikey we have hit a purple patch with Ninska.

At first it seemed like a good thing to read because she has started on WW2 at school ,  but we were both quickly gripped.  So much so I started to resent her reading it outside of bedtime.

It's about a boy discovering  what it means to be cared for.   If your heart doesn't melt you need to see a doctor.

But it also stays 100% the right side a schmaltz by virtue of some sensitive and skillful handling by the author.

I have read this a few times - each time you do have to plough through a rather dull middle of the book but persevere with it. The story of Willie and Mr Tom shows the growing relationship of two very different characters with very different backgrounds. The life of an evacuee is well written and the adjustments that his host makes is thought-provoking. There are moments in this book which will make you want to cry and others that raise a smile.

I really enjoyed this book. It helped me to understand what life was like for evacuees in the war. Mister Tom was a nice man who looked after William and made him confident after a horrible life in London
