Read to a child aged 3

This is a quite a small book but it has eight action packed chapters! The story is about two nice dogs - Dixie and Percy. Dixie has a very annoying neighbour called Lou Ella. Lou Ella gets a new pet – a Parrot called Ariel – and Ariel becomes friends with Dixie and Percy. One day, whilst trying escape from Lou Ella, Ariel and his two new friends get swept away on a big adventure in a hot air balloon! Will they get back home safely...? There are red, black and white illustrations on every page which really bring the story to life. There are activities in the back of the book and the first chapter of another Dixie O’Day book too!

My daughter is quite a bit younger than the main audience for this book, so I thought we'd read it in a few chunks. However, she kept saying 'more' so our first read was from beginning to end! This book has a charming retro feel (both the illustrations and the tale) and with plenty of pictures throughout, it is a good way to engage younger children with a longer story. The animals are full of character - we especially liked Ariel the bird - and Percy's love of food! There is a good villain too! The story itself also helps to hold attention, as you wonder what will happen next on the adventure. The book also has lots of nice extra features - maps and games. This will be a book we can continue to enjoy as my daughter grows up - nice to explore a different series from a favourite author.

This is a fun action packed book, for both girls or boys. I have just turned 6 and could read it all on my own.  Dixie and his friends have an adventure in the clouds in a hot air balloon, but things aren't plain sailing. I loved the adventure, the characters were likeable, and I wanted to keep reading it to find out what would happen next. It was an easy read, easy to follow, there were bits that made me laugh and I liked the illustrations on each page.

This book was a great adventure tale. The children's favourite character was Percy, but didn't like Lou Ella. It was good to read together, but also for the 6 year old to read along.

As a huge fan of Shirley Hughes 'Alfie' stories I was very excited to read a book from her new series. The illustrations are beautifully retro and charmingly engaging - both my children and I loves them. I read this to my three year old over three nights and he really enjoyed it, asking for it to be read again. The book is not just a story, it also contains interviews with the main characters and a number if activities and games. My seven year old lived the interviews and he enjoyed answering the same questions himself : ). As a grown up, I was a bit disappointed that , for me, the story lacked the charming everydayness of the Alfie stories. However, my children loved it, and that is the important thing!
