Hedgehog was feeling sad.
As sad as a hedgehog can feel.
So sad only one thing could help...

Tortoise was feeling sad.
As sad as a tortoise can feel.
So sad only one thing could help...

In this clever flipbook, both a hedgehog and a tortoise are looking for a hug. They ask all the other animals they come across but for some reason no one will hug them. Until a wise owl explains: Hedgehog is too spiky; Tortoise is too bony.

And that's when they find each other!

A beautiful, heartwarming picture book with all the universal appeal of Guess How Much I Love You.

The Hug is a gorgeous story of two animals, hedgehog and tortoise, who are both sad and looking for a friendly hug to cheer themselves up. The children were amused by the fact that this book worked both ways with two stories and so they decided we'd read the tortoise side first. They loved seeing all the animals that tortoise would meet and started saying who he would meet next. After a couple of animals the children started noticing a pattern and were excitedly shouting out what they think the animals excuses would be and surprisingly they actually got some of them right. As the book got to the middle the children were really happy for the tortoise as they'd predicted what would happen next and they loved seeing the centre page and how his mood changed. By the time we got on to the hedgehog side of the story they were already shouting out why they think they didn't want to hug hedgehog as they recognised where the story was going and how it would follow and so were just as excited to shout out any guesses of what the animals and their excuses would be. I really liked how the story followed the same kind of pattern as the children really enjoy these as they can get involved in telling the story. Having it be two stories that meet in the middle is unlike something I've seen and very effective for this book. The characters in the book are fantastic as they are all animals the children could recognise and the children got to see that the animals weren't just being mean but that they had a reason for it and that they felt a bit scared or uncomfortable. The illustrations are gorgeous in this book and it was great to see illustrations of the animals actions on the page after they first met as it was fun for the children to see (some did leave them a bit baffled though!) The children loved this book and really enjoyed seeing what happened to the animals throughout the book, such a lovely story for young children!

We loved this book! Really clever ideas of 2 books in one, each read from different ends of the book and meeting in the middle. My daughter loves seeing all of the animals & especially when the hedgehog and tortoise meet in the middle! Lovely quality paper & simple but stunning illustrations I can tell this is a book we will read again and again. Would make a lovely gift with a story sack of a few animals.

A beautifully narrated story about two animals and their struggles to find their soulmate. Hedgehog was feeling sad but no one want to comfort him because of his prickly prickles at same time tortoise was feeling the same and no one wants to give him a hug either because of his hard shell. They found each other in the end .
Such a heartwarming story with beautiful message . " There is someone for everyone "
My daughters enjoyed  this story with me and love the fact that you can read the story either way.

Me and my soon-to-be 3 year-old son loved this sweet little story about a hedgehog and a tortoise. We had also never come across a book with two covers and the story ending in the middle page of the book (and we have read a lot of books!).  That was fun and delighted my son as well as he quickly realised this was a unique book!  My son loves hugs so the storyline kept his attention throughout, and the illustrations were beautiful so that also helped! We have read it a few times already (we only got it this morning!), and we had lots of hugs at the end of each reading so I know this heartwarming tale will become a firm favourite with us.  I think this book is rather special and would make a lovely gift for toddlers.

My two children loved this book about a hedgehog wanting a hug. We loved that the book flips and you can read the story of the tortoise wanting a hug too!
It’s good to know there is always someone out there that feels the same way as you do, also that friends come in all shapes and sizes!

My daughter loves this book about a tortoise and a hedgehog both looking for a hug, we had to read it four times back to back when we first got it! It’s a clever book that meets in the middle with both animals getting the hug they need. The illustrations are uncluttered but full of character.

"The Hug" is a very sweet book, about a hedgehog and a tortoise who both want a hug and no other animals want to give them a hug. They have their own story each - and meet in the middle to give each other a big hug. It's very sweet and some nice undertones about being kind and beginning to understand each other's feelings and emotional needs.

My two daughters enjoyed the book - there isn't too much writing on each page, so although it looks like quite a big book it held the attention of my 2 year old. The illustrations are lovely and the book is well made (decent weighted paper!) so it was good for my youngest to turn the pages and get involved in holding the book. They both liked when they met and hugged each other in the joining middle page - the flipping the book around and meeting again in the middle was fun - they enjoyed that!
