Once upon a time there was a happy family: A mum, a dad, a gerbil, and the most beautifulest, cleverest, ever so kindest Princess Marianna. Until one horrible no good day when a new ruler was born...

From two of the most revered picture book creators working today comes a unique home-grown fairy tale about a little girl with a new baby brother. Marianna, the most beautiful, ever so kindest princess, lives happily with her mum, dad and gerbil. Happy, that is, until the new baby comes along. His Royal Highness King Baby is so smelly. He's so noisy. And all the talk in the Land is about him - non-stop, All the time! Has there ever been such a time of wicked rule?! Hilariously told from the over dramatic, reluctant big sister's perspective, Sally Lloyd-Jones' unique narrative voice is brought exquisitely, and hilariously, to life by award-winning illustrator David Roberts.

We thought this book was funny. My daughter has recently become a big sister, so we could relate. My daughter liked the illustrations, she took her time looking at them, they were very detailed and brought the story to life. My daughter liked the princess, but she felt sorry for her, and she didn't understand why the princess didn't like her baby brother (as she loves her new baby brother). But she loved the ending. We have read it quite a few times now, and some things in the book, she would point out that we say, such as saying well done if her baby brother burps.

This book is about a girl who thought she was a queen. But then she had a baby brother and everyone was admiring him and she felt that no one cared about her. She exaggerated everything, like saying she had to make my own breakfast 'like a poor orphan child'. This book made me laugh a lot. I think anyone who likes to be over dramatic would like this book a lot, like me.

This is a funny little story about becoming a big sister and the annoyingness of new siblings. My daughter (who hasn't got a little sibling) liked the royals in it and thought that the descriptions of the baby were very funny but I'm not sure she quite understood the fully meaning of the story and how the protagonist was making things sound worse than they were. Possibly aimed at a slightly older child - maybe 6+. Overall though a sweet and funny book and a good introductory book for future big brothers/sisters.
