Women in Sport celebrates the success of the tough, bold and fearless women who paved the way for today's athletes. The sportswomen featured include well-known figures like tennis player Serena Williams and broadcaster Clare Balding, as well as lesser-known pioneers like Gertrude Ederle, the first woman to swim the English Channel, and Keiko Fukuda, the highest-ranked female judoka in history. From the creator of the bestselling Women in Science , this richly illustrated book highlights the achievements and stories of fifty notable sportswomen from the 1800s to today, including trailblazers, Olympians and record-breakers in more than forty sports. It also contains infographics on topics such as muscle anatomy, pay and media statistics for female athletes, and influential women's teams.

My daughter is a fan of Goodnight Stories for Rebel Girls, so I figured this would be a great extension that would encourage her to become more confident with trying sports. I must admit that this book does not disappoint. It contains information about 50 females who have advanced sport in some way. It also has details about teams, historical timelines, and information about the gaps that still exist. I was especially impressed with a diagram listing many of the major muscles. This will be a great resource!
Since my daughter is 5, we've only read snippets of the book at this time. I've found a great deal of information in the main text, along with snippets around the edges. I will probably focus on the main text as part of our bedtime routine. The vocabulary is a bit advanced for her age, but it's a great way to introduce her to new words. I'd recommend this book for all sport fans, as well as anyone who needs a bit of inspiration to try sports.

Language and information is spot on. Great for my son and will be kept on the shelf for when my daughter is old enough to appreciate it. The illustrations are fun and stylised. Could possibly benefit from some photographs in it too.

This book is simply stunning.  Detailing 50 female athletes, some familiar, some less so with a page per person, this is easy to read either together or separately.
Empowering for girls but equally suitable for boys.

I have to apologise for the very late review! I won this giveaway at the same time as another similar book so it has taken us a while to work through them. I'm not interested in sport at all, but I want to give my daughter a good chance of getting into it and thought this book would be perfect to give her some role models and inspiration. Given my lack of interest in sport I wasn't particularly excited to read the book, but I was pleasantly surprised, even I found it interesting. My daughter is 5 so I did summarise and reword some stories just to simplify it for her but they are really good stories to teach. It has a good range of women and lessons to learn. I would definitely recommend it to young girls.

This is a great book for boys and girls, probably suited for Year 6 and upwards - also one for parents and teachers. Featuring 50 women athletes and sports stars, who I am ashamed to admit, many I have never even heard of. Each woman is featured across two pages, one page being an illustration (in a unique style) plus a page of quite dense but very informative text about their sporting accomplishments and significance off the track/court/ski slope etc or in Ellen MacArthur's case, the sea =)

There is also a great call out a double page spread on Pay and Media Statistics - which is shameful, eg max Men's player's pay in NBA in 2015/16 was 16 million dollars, in WBNA, just 109 thousand dollars. Fascinating stuff - as a school teacher, I will be dipping into this book regularly for ideas for assemblies. I would also recommend "A Galaxy of her own - amazing stories of women in space" by Libby Jackson as another great book to inspire girls into roles that shouldn't just be the preserve of men!

I love any sort of book that caters to my feminist side (which, if we're being honest, is all of me?), and I also am a slight sports fan, so when I saw this book, I had to grab a copy! I've heard good things about this book's predecessor, "Women in Science", and while I haven't read that one, I can safely say that I LOVED this book. I'm not much of a non-fiction reader, so reading anything educational honestly usually requires something special added in the mix, and this book absolutely has that, between how easy to read it is and how adorable the illustrations are.

I learned so much about so many awesome female athletes and was reminded of how incredible and EQUAL we women genuinely are (in every way, no matter what society says!). I can see myself recommending this title to so many friends and family members, and cannot wait until my son is old enough for me to read this with him and to teach him about incredible women in sports

After reading bed time stories for rebel girls , which I enjoyed enormously , and women in science  , 50 fearless  pioneers who changed the world  , which is similar in illustration and style to this one , I decided to continue my education in women who were radical . and what better place to do it than in my  (I'll admit it ) weak spot : sports . I was not disappointed.......

From fairly recent super stars :Clare balding and serina Williams come to mind , to the oldest of pioneers , before the winter Olympics  had even started let alone women were allowed ! This book delivers fifty inspiring women to inspire everyone from 9 or 10 right up to adults to aim high and never give up .I would recommend this book to both boys and girls from the above suggested age range , simply because of the language and complexity used , fascinating for those who could understand it , but confusing for younger readers who couldn't  a really good read , even for those who might prefer fiction
