A non-fiction picture book. How do animals sleep? Some alone, some in packs, some upside-down, some in the daytime...Kate Prendergast takes a close look at the sleeping habits of a wide range of animals, birds and fish. Includes meerkats, bats, horses and dogs - and who knew that fish slept with their eyes open? A first information book, illustrated with beautiful close-ups of the animals featured, the book ends with a question - do animals dream? and four pages of curious animal facts.

Beautifully illustrated, this is gentle book about the different ways in which animals around the world sleep. The main part of the book features one animal on each page, and my son found it fascinating to learn that ants only fall asleep for moments at a time or that sloths would not fall out of trees while they slept.  As a reluctant reader, it was heartening to see that my son was happy to read sections of this book. We also had quite a few interesting conversations about the different ways in which animals sleep (and agreed that we would both rather be bears who sleep all winter than busy ants!). At the end of the book is a section with more detailed facts on each of the animals featured in the book. My son also loved this, and it is great as it makes the age range that this book is suitable a bit longer.

Would definitely recommend this utterly charming book for any animal loving young children.

This book was delivered to us wrapped up with a note, which made it all the more exciting to open. Whilst this book is non fiction, my daughters and nephew still enjoyed reading it and learning, especially the facts. Even my 15 month old enjoyed looking at all the different animals. My nephew,Dawoud, is four and loves to ask questions and learn new things, so this was perfect for him, as it had a suitable amount of information and facts. Though the cover was not very attractive, as I normally go for bright and colourful, this book did not disappoint and I will recommend to my friends and family.

We were really impressed by this book. I just loved watching my 5 year old’s eyes go big when she heard some of the facts about how animals sleep. She was really interested in this book and couldn’t wait to turn the page to learn something else. I learnt a few things too! The tone of the book is also perfect for this age child. A great addition to our little library!

Our book review for Sleep by Kate Prendergast

Sleep is a picture book for children in KS1 and we didn't like reading it, we loved reading it!

It is all about animals and how they sleep. It has illustrations which are fantastic. One of our favourite pages in this book is the page about horses sleeping. Did you know that baby horses called foals sleep for half of their day until they are 3 months old?

Our favourite part of Sleep is the pages at the back because they have really interesting facts about how other animals sleep. We found out that fish sleep with their eyes open, penguins never have a proper sleep because they're afraid of being killed by predators and giraffes sleep standing up.

We think that this book is wonderful to read and it could help if you are learning about animals at school. This is your perfect match!

Thank you Toppsta and Old Barn Books for sending us this book!

Totally love this book! The illustrations are simply beautiful. The book has a hard back, which instantly makes it feel special. Inside, there is a story about how different animals sleep. The words are simple so even my 5-year-old can read the book.

We loved this beautifully illustrated book. The pictures are lovely. My son enjoyed the information on animals at the back of the book but he felt he was a little old for the actual story. He is 5 and it is probably aimed at slightly younger children.

My son is in reception and as soon as he saw this book he could read the title and browse through the book and said he could read it. It's a non fiction book with some cute classical style illustrations for each animal and a phrase on how that animal sleeps. His favourite part was the meerkats. Then in the end, there is a bit more text on each of the animals with curiosities.

My two loved the extra facts at the back. Beautifully illustrated and full of facts. Perfect for any little one who wants to know more about sleep.
