'Defender of the Realm: Dark Age' is the second book, following on from 'Defender of the Realm'. My Year 7 book group read the first book as it was nominated in our local 'Brilliant Book Awards'. We loved the book so were delighted when we had the chance to read and review the second book.
Here, in Dark Age, the fight against the Black Dragon continues, but this time Professor Lock has invoked the Viking Lord, Guthrum and his legion of Vikings back from the dead to terrorise the nation.  Will the combined might of these two foes be too much for Alfie, Defender of the Realm? Can he count on the support of his friends?

Full of humour and adventure we thoroughly enjoyed it. I would have no hesitation in recommending it to one of my well read Year 5s or Year 6s but (and the Year 7s agreed) would ensure they had read the first book first!!

This book was brilliant we found it a real page turner from the beginning.  The title and cover didn't appeal to my daughter but once we started reading she loved it.  A brilliant idea that members of the royal family have superhero powers to protect the realm.  Mixed with some mythology, family secrets and lots of battles we loved following Alfie (the young king) on his journey.  A great read if you liked Percy Jackson or Magnus Chase.  We are now going to read the first story.

This book was brilliant and keeps you guessing at what's going to happen. I would recommend reading the first book in the series first so you know what's going on.
I really enjoyed the fighting scenes and the cliff hanger of an ending makes me want to read the next book.
I would definitely recommend this books to others that enjoy action books.

To start with, I found the book quite difficult to get into, (understandably as this was the second book in a series), but once I had got into it, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The rivalry between Alfie and Richard made me quite emotional, especially the part in which Alfie realises he is the Black Dragon. I found Lock sinister and snake-like, and found Guthrum funny but intimidating. The plot-twist concerning Alfie's mysterious defender is brilliant, and Alfies final stand at the end moved me to tears. I would strongly recommend this book.

Defenders of the Realm: Dark Age is the second book in the Dark Age Series written by Mark Huckerby and Nick Ostler. Alfie has been made King and is secretly is a knight, who defends Britain from Dragons and other monstrous creatures. He saved England from the deadly Black Dragon in the great battle at his coronation. But the Black Dragon has returned with help from some undead Vikings and Alfie jealous brother. Will Alfie defeat the Black Dragon for the second time or will Britain be under a new ruler? The final book in this trilogy Defender of the Realm #3: King's Army is coming out later this year. I highly recommended this book for children aged 10+.

When Alfie becomes King at 14 years old, he didn't realise that his job would include fighting supernatural creatures! When a group of undead vikings arrive in England, Alfie must don armour and fight for British freedom. The undead vikings are mean and greedy, and smelly, but this does not deter Alfie and his friends. I liked this book, it is one of my favourites. I liked the plot,  everything slides together making this book easy to read and full of excitement.

Defender of the Realm: Dark Age is the second book in the series. I would definitely recommend reading the first book before this as the story assumes a knowledge of the characters from the very beginning. Once again Alfie and the gang are pitted against the Black Dragon for control of the Crown but it was great to see the character development of the 'baddies' in this instalment. Although the pace slowed down through the middle section the action really got going for the dramatic climax. A great story which combines history and mythology alongside teen angst, family and friendship issues. A fun read for the 9-12 age group.

My daughter read this book in one sitting! She wasn't able to read the book when it first arrived because it's obviously the second book in the series, but once she completed the first one she moved onto this one and I just couldn't pry her away! Obviously she doesn't want to give away spoilers but she CAN say that the Characters are great and original, as is the action thrilled storyline, and she can't wait for the series to continue!

The cover of this book looks great, but I didn't enjoy it. The characters weren't introduced enough so I didn't feel like I knew them, in chapter 3 we meet Alfie but I knew nothing about him or his training.

There was an exciting chase at the beginning on the book, but not understanding why the chase happened made the story difficult to follow.
