She says 'I've worked so hard for years and I deserve a rest!'
As she scribbles with crayons and pours custard down her dress,
She's dangling from the banister with her head upside-down!
Does your Mum do this?
Help! My Mum's growing DOWN!

Mum is a gamer, a party animal and a free spirit making life hard work for her nine year old son. These poems are a glimpse into their parent child relationship; their antics and adventures. The poems are bold, brave, funny and some - very moving. This collection shows just how funny, rude and naughty mums can be! It's Dahl meets Dr Seuss meets Colin McNaughton with a sprinkling of Absolutely Fabulous.

My Mum’s Growing Down is a very funny collection of poems about a teenage son and his mom. The poems are raucous and a joy to read aloud. Most are from the point of view of the son but there’s also a section at the back by mom. It begins by relating some very familiar cringeworthy situations: cinema trips, meals out together, parents’ evening… However, what I initially thought was going to be a teenage son wincing at his mom’s embarrassing antics actually ends up as a celebration of his mom’s optimism and joie de vivre. This is a mom who makes rainy days fun and rejoices in the world; she’s a bright light and bundle of positive energy – a counterbalance to the gloom.
Oh, I love the world, me
I love that flowers sprout out of cracks in
concrete pavements
that people write love letters
and make art for no reason
[…] I love that the sky holds back snow
as a treat
and never fails to be magic
Extract from My Mum Says ‘Oh, The World!’

I was struck by the power of the love between mother and son. A number of poems moved me to tears, including My Mum Whispers I Love You Like… and My Mum’s Son. As a single mother to a young son, these poems convey everything I want my son to know about my feelings for him and very nearly broke my heart when I read them.
When you were in my tummy
says Mum
the world rumbled something HUGE
that day
I knew things would never be the same again.
[…] And all of the love I knew before
seemed to shatter
and feel a bit embarrassed
because soon I would know you.
Extract from My Mum’s Son

It’s this mix of poems told for the laughs and poems written from the heart that makes My Mum’s Growing Down so very special. It also doesn’t shy away from reality. Laura’s poems tell of the bad days and the arguments too. It’s a truthful book and all the better for it.

This is a wonderful collection of poems. I love its message of hope, its lust for life and the huge all-conquering love between a mother and a son that radiates from the pages. And to top it all, the book’s bright yellow cover and neon pink sprayed edges perfectly reflect Mum’s exuberant personality!

A review with a little help from Mummy doing the typing: This book is really funny, the poems and the pictures made me laugh a lot. I liked reading them with Mummy and Daddy at bedtime.
Feedback from Mummy: This is a really fun collection of poems which admittedly even made me laugh out loud. We have had great fun reading these together at bed time. They are very clever, witty and hilarious poems that have had my seven year old daughter laughing hysterically for the last few evenings. If your child is a fan of Roald Dahl then I highly recommend this book as it has the same level of hilarity and clever wit. We have already been browsing for more books by Laura Dockrill.

This collection of poems are brilliant and my daughter and myself really enjoyed reading them together. We both found them really entertaining and some of them are laugh out loud funny. I did get quite emotional reading some of them too as it really highlights some of the little things that make being a mum so important and worthwhile. Overall we both thought that the book was fab and I would really recommend that you do read the poems together with your child as it made it all the more special and enjoyable for us.

My son loves this collection of poems. They are funny and true to life and we could relate to a lot of them. His favourite was My mums a gamer. He asked for me to read some of the poems again to him as he enjoyed them so much. The poems are the perfect length for him and very cleverly written too!

'My mum is Growing Down ' is a fantastic selection of funny and moving poems for children. All of them describe perfectly the 'struggles' mums / children face ever day:) My daughter loves My Mum's Allergic and my favourite is My Mum Attends Parents' Evening.  I imagine every child will quickly discover their own favourites. I think it's a great introduction to poetry - children can learn the structure of poems and how to write them base on this book. I would recommend it for parents to read with their children. The illustrations are superb and compliment the poems extremely well!

I don't read a lot of poetry, so didn't know what I would think about this book. There is a contents page, so can read it in order, or skip to the poems you think you will prefer first. None of the poems were really long, some of them were quite short. I preferred some more than others, the ones that were funny, and also the rhyming ones. I liked the book more than I thought I would. Not all poems are boring
