I wish there were more stars - I can't say enough good stuff about the Phoenix. We were given a stack of about 150 back-issues by a neighbour and my three sons (ages 10, 7 and 7) devoured them - read everything cover to cover at least twice. We have now subscribed, and they really look forward to getting a new magazine in the post each week. The variety of stories and graphic styles is amazing, with something for absolutely any taste, and there are NO ADVERTS. I even secretly like reading them myself sometimes. I'm a fan of the puzzles in Von Doogan and the anarchic humour of Bunny vs Monkey, but there are stories with positive role models and interesting lead characters and all sorts.
The boys gave out some of the old issues in their birthday party bags and their friends all loved it. Their little girl cousins (ages 8 and 6) also love it. We donated the leftover old magazines to the school and the teachers love it. Honestly it's just great.

Every week my  hidden grab this comic and read it cover to cover.  It often makes them laugh out loud.  They book were tested to have the reading level/vicabulary of a much older child, partly from being allowed to read what they enjoy.
They struggle with novels; characters and relationships for older children don't  interest them. instead they love the story lines here.

The arrival of The Phoenix Comic in its colourful envelope on our doormat every Friday is a sign of the start of the weekend in our house!  As soon as my daughter (age 14) arrives home from school, she curls up on the sofa and reads The Phoenix Comic from start to finish.  This has been happening every Friday for the last 2.5 years since we first discovered this amazing comic.  My daughter is an avid reader and her continued interest in this comic, week after week, is a real testament to the quality of this publication.  As a parent (and funder of the subscription), I feel The Phoenix Comic is excellent value for money and I particularly like the fact that there are no adverts in it.  The comic is well set out, full of stunning illustrations and captivating stories which leaves the reader wondering what will happen in each story next week.  We now have several binders full of The Phoenix Comic which will stay with my daughter for ever and will hopefully be enjoyed by future generations of our family.

I have been reading the phoenix for 2 1/2 years and I have not been disappointed with it a single time! I am 14 and I still love the comic because of the gripping storylines in it and the amazing illustrations. Although the comic is aimed at ages 6-12, many people carry on reading it, like me!
I discovered the Phoenix at Carfest where they had a drawing workshop with Gary Northfield, one of the authors. I loved the workshop and we (my mum) bought me the 3 week taster of the phoenix and I loved it so much that she had to subscribe to the phoenix!
Every Friday when I come back form school I locate the brightly coloured envelope and read the phoenix from cover to cover! I get slightly disappointed when I do not find the phoenix and have to wait for the post to come the next day to get the comic!
I really appreciate the lack of adverts in the comic because you can read the comic without interruptions from adverts that you do not want to know about.
I would recommend this comic to lots of people. I have made some of my friends subscribe to the phoenix as well!!
I would suggest buying the phoenix binders if you want to store your phoenix's in a tidy way if you do not throw them away.
Any creative child would love the phoenix!!

We actually started our reading Phoenix books from the library....in particular Monkey vs Bunny which is a completely hectic and hilarous cartoon, but also some of their longer graphic novels, such as "Lost Tales" which are fascinating fables from around the world.  After a few of these bedtime stories, I decided we should subscribe to the comic.  My 8 year old demolishes it in an instant.  My 5 year old will happily pore through the images and wait for me to read all the stories to him later.  Well worth the investment.  It offers a brilliant range of themes, tales and illustrations.

This comic aimed at older children came through the post in a very eye catching and colourful a4 envelope and I knew my son would be interested in looking through what it had to offer.
At first look it seemed quite a thin comic/little content but we were wrong. I wondered if the price £3.25 was justified. But my son who had taken these comics to read seemed to carry them with him during the days to read a bit more. He told me how funny the stories were. One story about a sandwich being sad because he wasn't be eaten! This is definitely my 12 year olds humour. The illustration and artwork were very silly but funny because of it. He found it quite original and not like anything else he's read or seen on cartoon channels. There was also puzzles like wordsearches and factual pieces to read. And although there's sillier stories there is a bit more serious and gripping reads in there too to interest. My son felt it was more aimed for boys but didn't see why girls wouldn't enjoy it.   He recommended and will definitely like to read more if we decide to get a subscription. Thanks for letting us review a great comic!

Absolutely brilliant.
My son (8) has been a subscriber for about a year now, after picking up a copy in Waitrose. He gets excited every Friday when it arrives through the door and has 3 binders full of the comics, which he reads and re-reads again and again. We even had Phoenix party bags at his last birthday.
The Phoenix is cool, smart, funny and cheeky, with excellent illustrations throughout. The contributing authors include well-known and well-celebrated writers and illustrators. It is perfect for young and older readers alike.
Whenever I manage to sneak a look, or my son shows me, I've thought it was brilliant.
Cannot recommend highly enough.

The whole household loves the Phoenix Comic. My son (7) really looks forward to it coming through the door in its decorated envelope every Friday. The characters are fun, there's plenty to read and do and it's never same-y. Our personal favourites are Bunny Vs Monkey, Evil Emperor Penguin and Squid Bits. We love Phoenix so much we bought a subscription for our school library.

We have been receiving The Phoenix Comic for 5 years since my children were 7, 5 and 2. All three love it and there is a scrum to get to it first. We have tried other magazines / bought other comics but The Phoenix is by far the best. When other children come to our house they are often found with their head in a Phoenix Magazine before long.
My favourite quote is 'How can it seem to take so long for The Phoenix to arrive bit as soon as you start reading it, it is like you have just finished reading the last one.'
The children often recount tales about historic figures which have usually come from reading Corpse Talk rather than history lessons.
I love that there are no adverts or toys.

My son loves this - he grabs it as soon as he gets back from school and reads it from cover to cover.
His only complaint? That it's too short - but he has a pile by his bed and re-reads them most nights. So it's not really an issue (& he is a voracious reader).
His school take it, so that's how he found out about it

My son absolutely loves the Phoenix (and so do I - secretly). The stories are brilliant - really well written and funny/exciting/intriguing, the artwork is fabulous, and the whole magazine is pitched absolutely bang on for older children. Particular shout out for Bunny vs Monkey and the fabulous Jamie Smart.
Bought a couple of copies in Waitrose and just renewed his annual subscription. Friday is his favourite day of the week because that's the day the Phoenix arrives.

I really enjoyed these comics. I enjoy comics anyway but this one was great. It was interesting to read and kept your attention. It was easy to read and it was funny. I really enjoyed the stories and the puzzles. I also liked the page where fans could send pictures of their art in. This would be great for girls and boys, and even my mom and dad read it too.  I have asked my mom to get me some more copies, so a big thumbs up from me.

I think this is a really good comic book with a range of comics (that are awesome).  When the phoenix arrives each week I read it imidiatly.  All of the comics in the Phoenix are really funny and exciting.  One of the things I really like about the Phoenix is that it shows pictures that other readers have drawn.  It is really exciting to see what everyone has drawn.

Here's the thing. All the other reviews are right. We had several friends who subscribed (for their kids - or at least that was the official version)  so I thought I'd give it a go on their cheapo trial. Now I am stuck. My son waits vy the letterbox . We all read it. It's a brilliant, brillitcomic for kids. Funny, smart, sincere - so it doesn't feel patronising . It is great. I love it as much as my two kids. I often remember a quote from Neil Gaimon who said once that he read nothing but comics between 8 and 12.the point is: he was reading. Now kids who don't feel ready for full on novels can read The Phoenix ! Subscribe , honestly, you won't regret it!
