This book is distinguished from other texts by its thematic (rather than chronological) approach to Spanish and Latin American literature. It is intended to awaken enthusiasm for poetry, fiction, drama and essays in students who have little experience reading literature. The 75 selections are organized into five thematic units: love, companionship and solitude, death, objects and landscapes, and literary expression. Each selection is accompanied by biographical and historical background information, thought-provoking questions, and themes for composition or further discussion. Some of the 55 authors are represented by more than one selection, allowing students to encounter authors in different thematic contexts.
