In this board book edition of a picture book classic, a delightful surprise colourfully unfolds when a little girl called Handa puts seven delicious fruits in a basket to take to her friend.

A beautiful board book edition of a bestselling modern classic, this is the story of Handa, who's part of the Luo tribe in south-west Kenya. Handa decides to take seven pieces of delicious fruit to her friend, Akeyo, who lives in the neighbouring village. But as Akeyo muses, I wonder what fruit Akeyo will like best?, a series of sneaky animals steal something from Handa's basket, which she's carrying on her head... When Handa reaches Akeyo, will she have anything left to offer her friend? Richly illustrated, brimming with luscious fruit and cheeky wild animals, this mouth-watering story is for the youngest of readers. In the best pantomime spirit, children will long to tell Handa what's happening right behind her!

Handa's surprise is a story about a little girl called Handa.
One day Handa went to see her friend Akeyo who lives in a neighbourhood village.
She took some fruits as her present and walks to her friend village whilst carrying the basket of fruits on her head .
On the way to her friend's village the fruits are taken one by one by different animals until there is nothing left.
It's a fantastic book to read to my daughters and they love all the different animals and the exotic fruits.
I'm glad that I have found this book about a different culture and the vibrant illustrations make it even more interesting to read.

I'l came across this book a few years ago when working in key stage one at a school.  I've since been given it as part of a book sharing project to share with my two year old. The bright bold pictures which are almost like batik,  are beautiful and engaging.  The story is simple, naughty animals stealing fruit from handas basket, great intro to African animals, different types of fruit and a great way of counting too. This has become a regular read in our house,  with my little one naming it the fruit book!

A great bedtime read as it's a short story. It's about a little girl who takes a variety of fruit to her friend ; she carries the basket on her head. Along the way different animals take a piece of fruit until the basket is empty- Handa has no idea what has been happening.  A goat escapes and crashes into a tree filling Handa's basket with tangerines, so when she meets her friend and she lifts the basket down they both get a big surprise.  My daughter really enjoyed this book and we have read it many times, her favourite part is when all the animals sneak the fruit away. It has beautiful illustrations and I talked about the different animals and fruit with my daughter afterwards so now she has learnt new animals due to this book.

This deliciously fun picture book tells the fantastic story of Handa, who is going to visit her friend Akeyo with a surprise; a basket of fruit. She wasn't sure which fruit Akeyo will like best so she put several different kinds in. On her way she passes several different types of animals and unbeknownst to her, they help themselves until the basket is empty. Luckily a goat saves the day!

The text is simple; usually only a line or two at most. After Handa has set off on her journey the text becomes fairly repetitive i.e. "will she like the ... best?" With every rendition another fruit in introduced and another animal takes it from the basket to eat. It's a great way of introducing or consolidating vocabulary around animals and fruit.

The illustrations are absolutely beautiful! They are vivid and rich with colour. My toddlers adore them; they spend ages pouring over them. They love the animals in particular. It's a wonderful way to show young children a different culture and how other people live in a different country - even little differences such as clothes.

This is a gorgeous book and a simple, sweet story - I highly recommend it; it's a must-read in my opinion!

My daughter and I both love this one. I love the picture's of the African village and people as well as all the African animals that Handa meets on her walk. My daughter almost yells at the pages to tell Handa the animals are stealing her fruit and loves the surprise at the end.

Handa  is a girl who decides to take a selection of seven different fruits to her friend Akeyo to see which she would like. The fruits are carried in a basket upon her head, and along her walk various cheeky animals steal pieces of fruit. Will any be left by the time she arrives at her friends house?
The story is great as it includes lots of animals and different kinds of fruit, and the tale is gentle in its telling. When I asked my son what he thought of the story he said,"I laughed so much I almost fell out of bed!". Which is probably the best review you can get for a book : )

I really enjoy this book so much that I even dressed up as Handa for World Book Day. I remember when I was 5 and I didn’t want to leave the book shop without it. It’s the first book I’d seen with someone who looked like me. I love that it is about a little village girl and I really enjoy the cheeky animals that are in the book. They make it funny.
