My daughter really enjoyed reading this book- although she wasn't convinced by the cover as she thought the book was written for boys. I had to explain her that actually all books are for everyone and boys have a right to be on the cover from time to time! It was really refreshing to have a main character with a disability - doesn't happen very often. James is  a boy in a slightly strange family living an adventurous life with his monkey. I think it's a great book for all children! Lovely illustrations that helps children entertain the book. My daughter said she will read this book again as she really enjoyed it and she promised to offer the book to her sister:)

This is a charming & funny book. The characters are great, the plot was exciting enough to engage the boy without being scary. The author's writing style is quite tongue-in-cheek & I did have to explain a few of the jokes & idioms to the boy but I enjoyed the gags too.
We really enjoyed the exploits of the mischievous & fiendishly clever monkey. The boy's favourite bit was the end, but the whole book had him engrossed & he kept begging for one more chapter!
The main character Jams is disabled using a walking frame & splints. This is written well & it's nice to see a positive depiction of disability in a main character.
We thoroughly recommend this and will be looking out for other books by the same author.

Jams and his family get a monkey to look after, he is clever but mischievous, and he becomes Jam's best friend. The book was very funny, with plenty of adventure and I've not read a book like this. It was quite a short book, so I wished it was longer as it was really enjoyable. The chapter names were funny, and the book had black and white illustrations. I would be very happy if another book featuring Jam and Thimble came out.

Drake and I read this book together as it was a little bit too difficult for him to read by himself and he struggled with a few of the words.
What we liked:
- We liked that Jams uses a walking frame. Drake's aunty has Cerebral Palsy and uses one and you never see them mentioned in books or if they are then the person using it is pitiful and sad but Jams is awesome - he's smart, he's strong and he''s funny.
- We loved Thimble - Drake has told me he would love to have a pet monkey too!
- The story is great, engaging, funny
- We like the characters even the dad who is kind of unlikable at first but gets better towards the end
Drake thoroughly enjoyed the book and I enjoyed reading it with him. The book does have some grown up natured themes to it in that it does mention relationship probs between the parents and things but not in a huge amount of detail.

At times this is laugh out loud funny with the antics of Thimble the monkey, from DIY with a hacksaw to heroic rescues. It's easy reading about Jams, his disfunctional family and of course the adopted monkey.

This was one of the 2017 shortlist for the Scholastic Books Laugh Out Loud Book Awards in the age 6-8 year olds category. When I presented the 4 shortlisted books to my group of Year 4 readers most of them selected this book and returned a week later all having read and enjoyed it. It is written at a great level for this age group with lots of humorous cartoon type picture interspersed amongst the text. The main plot concerns Jam ( a boy with cerebral palsy who uses a walking frame- but this is incidental so great to see a story including a child with a disability that is in no way mawkish) and his family who acquire a monkey as an addition to the family from their neighbours.  As you might imagine this results in all sorts of mayhem and funny episodes - the most hilarious the children perhaps predictably felt involving an incident involving poo!!
Most of the group game it a 4/5  and are keen to read some further tales about Thimble and Jam.
