The series, "A Sense of History" uses a combination of narrative and unusual sources to tell good stories well. It invites teachers and pupils to explore the past together and tap into the lives and feelings of the men and women of the time. It should encourage pupils to make their own judgements based on the evidence they have and give them confidence to debate their own findings, and should provide teachers with a wealth of historical source material for discussion and further study. The structure of "A Sense of History" relates directly to the National Curriculum in England and Wales, but can also be used as part of the new history curriculum in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The series aims to give children continuation throughout their school years, providing material for infants at Key Stage 1, for juniors at Key Stage 2 and for lower secondary pupils at Key Stage 3. Designed for Core Study Unit 3, at Key Stage 2, this evaluation pack looks at Victorian Britain - in particular at the ways in which industrialization affected the lives of men, women and children at all levels of society in England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.
Included in the pack are a set of six colour A2-size posters, a pack of 12 timelines, a "Victorian Britain Resource Book", which contains source material and useful facts, and a copy of "Your Victorian Locality", which shows children how to search for evidence of change in their own local buildings, streets and families. Two audio cassettes provide a taped reading of the text of the introductory and resource books. These cassettes aim to aid the introduction of the specialist vocabulary and names, offer practice in listening skills and make group work easier for teachers to organize. A teacher's book is also included in the evaluation pack. Presented in a ring binder file, the teacher's book contains sections on planning the whole school policy for history; staffroom workshops for use on INSET days; resources and approaches; and assessing and recording children's progress. A reference section, photocopiable masters and stories covering each topic are also included.
