The explanation and working model presented in here highlights key considerations and principles and is intended to provide self esteem mentors with a pragmatic framework within which to work at enhancing children's self esteem. 1. Why should we be concerned about youth self esteem? There is increasing concern being expressed that the current social and economic pressures that permeate across all sectors of western society are taking a toll on the quality of life styles of increasing numbers of youth. Recent studies have revealed that significant numbers of youth are reporting problems with depression, anxiety, controlling temper, stress and personal relationships. Care givers understand that a healthy self esteem is vital to children's well being. A review of the literature points to two key areas in which healthy self esteem has a positive influence. Performance Behaviour Children with a healthy self esteem are most likely to utilize their top 10-20% of potential.
They freely move out of their performance 'comfort zones' and in doing so are willing to take acceptable risks. By taking these acceptable risks they are prepared to attempt tasks they perceive that they might fail at and, additionally, they are willing to undertake tasks that are entirely new. The performance of a child with healthy self esteem will not be hindered by an underlying 'fear of failure'.
