Adopted as a baby by the villagers of Bassorah, Vancy feels like an outsider. She leaves to find her parents but is captured and taken to the fortress of the evil Herit (who turns out to be her father). Vancy's friends help her escape into the Hinterland, and are guided by telepathic dogs to her uncle. Together, they destroy Herit's fortress.
