The illustration is beautiful and very detailed. The story is a little sad because the girl's father never has any time for her but something magical happens after she receives her toy gorilla. The gorilla takes her to many places and finally her own father brings her to the zoo, a place she dreams of going.

The illustrations and books written by Anthony Browne are beautiful, and Gorilla is exceptional.
Gorilla is the story of Hannah, a young girl whose favourite animal is a Gorilla. All Hannah wants is to visit Gorilla's in the zoo, but her dad is always too busy to take her. One magical night, Hannah's toy gorilla comes to life and takes her on an adventure that she will never forget.
My children have always been captivated by this story, and I recently read it to a class in which it had a matched effect. The illustrations are first class and atmospheric, the paragraph of text that accompanies each double page spread is well timed and paced for the story.  As a reader, it's a calming and peaceful story to read, and it is very accessible for growing readers to read themselves.
I would say that this book has to be part of a child's home library - it's amazing! It would also make a lovely gift. Great for ages 1 to 9!

I really enjoy reading Anthony Browne books and they lend themselves to a range of audiences. We enjoyed the story, especially when the Gorilla is dressed in Dad's clothing. We found some parts quite funny but the story also lent itself to discussions about the characters feelings and recognising what had made them feel in that way. There weren't any topics covered that I needed to be aware of before hand though.

The illustrations are lovely.   Hannah seems like a lovely girl, who is lonely but doesn't complain. Her father doesn't have much time for her, for her birthday she asks to see a gorilla but he gets her a teddy gorilla, but in the night it comes to lifeand takes her out on an adventure. My son loved that the gorilla came to life and took Hannah on an adventure. It was a nice ending as Hannah's father took her to the zoo the next day to see the gorillas, which was what she wanted.

We have previously read an Anthony Browne book (The Tunnel) and not much liked it but decided to give this one a go as it's one of his most famous books. I think the illustrations perhaps suit an older child better (my daughter is 2.5) as they are certainly not warm or cosy. We read the book together once but have not gone back to it since. She liked the parts where the gorilla wore human clothes but was sad that the chimpanzee was in a cage. There was an overall feeling of melancholy about the book that you don't often get in books for very young children and that could be why neither of us enjoyed it that much despite a marginally happy ending.

I was under pressure on buying guide a a book for reading week and decided to buy his given the author's brilliant reputation. It brings up the sadness a child has on not being able to spend time with her much loved father which was a good discussion point with a class of very attentive 6-7year olds  but the actual story line was quite preschool/nursery like.
Had I read it to younger children maybe I wouldn't have felt let down but it lacked some substance ultimately.
The illustrations were well done and it was the right amount of pages. Not for me but I'm sure some will enjoy this.
