Very fun adventure book! The longest books I read to my son before this book were around 100 pages, and this one is almost three times as long and was easy to keep him captivated, because of the way it was written and the various illustrations! It took us a week of reading before bedtime and we had lots of fun following Mr Penguin and his friends' adventures. Besides the penguin, there's a spider, a pigeon and a woman. They're not short on adventures: they are pursued by bodyguards, fall of a building, their airplane crashes, they rescue rodents, and much more!

We didn't read the other Mr Penguin book, but this didn't affect any of the reading. There were some difficult words for a 5 year old to understand, but the text flows super well and there's always something happening, which kept my son's attention throughout. During the story there is some text every now and then related to a character of the story that comes into the story more to the end, but I noticed immediately that this would confuse my son and might make him loose focus, so I avoided these parts, and I just kept to one narrative and I think this helped, and it didn't really compromise any of the understanding of the story. I imagine for older kids this isn't a problem at all.

After reading this book, my son decided he also wanted to write a book, so this book was excellent for my son!

We loved this book so many twists and turns, my girls love the friendship between mr penguin and Colin, the story reads well and myself and my 7 year old took it in turns to read a chapter, the girls love all the illustrations and can not wait to read another mr penguin book, these books are a brilliant way to introduce a little mystery and detective work for the younger ones

My 6 year old son had been eagerly awaiting this Mr Penguin follow up and was not disappointed, insisting this should be a five star review! Alex T Smith has created a truly lovable detective in Mr Penguin and a hilarious, sharp sidekick in Colin the spider. Regardless of plot, there is charm and humour in simply following their adventures and friendship.

In this book, Mr Penguin and Colin are hunting for a shadowy hypnotist called Dr Mesmero who has plans to take over the world...ably abetted by new friends and old, this follows their quest to conquer the baddies in snowy village Schneedorf-on-the-park. The illustrations, as ever, are a delight and we've hand drawn several of the funniest ones since: we even have Mr Penguin and Colin on our fridge at the moment crash-landing on the mountainside!

This is a a great book, really good quality too. Mr penquin and Colin crash land on a strange mountain, but there's lots of missing. They have a fun adventure to find out what's going on. A really fun laugh out loud adventure story, with some nice illustrations too.

I read this one first and am now reading it to my nearly 5 yr old who is enjoying it immensely. Adventurer Mr Penguin (very like Indiana Jone) solves mysteries with his friend Colin (a spider). The story is action packed and very funny. Perhaps a little old for my daughter as it is quite long but would be perfect for a 6/7 yr old. The pictures all the way through help a lot and are very entertaining. We will certainly be looking out for others in this series. It you liked this authors 'Claude' books then this is very similarly written, just much longer and more in depth.

We adored Mr Penguin and the Lost Treasure so much that my 5 year old was nervous that the sequel wouldn't live up to that joy, however she was so pleased to declare that this was AMAZINGLY GREAT and definitely as good as the first one and is excited to hear that Mr Penguin will return in a third instalment.

I thoroughly enjoy reading anything by Alex T Smith as his distinctive style of writing and illustrating is a joy to read both for children and adults and lends itself well to those with dramatic tendencies for the rich opportunities for silly voices. I also adore that Smith is dedicated to reviving a rich tapestry of quintessentially eccentric British vocabulary for another generation with such delights as 'kerfuffle' and 'skeddaddled' dotting through the otherwise nicely accessible but still 'pushing' language and construction.

We read this aloud with myself, my 5 year old (she is a very capable reader) swapping the odd page or two there to build her fluency, expression and stamina but I would say this is excellent for confident independent readers circa 8 and up, though is entirely suitable for read aloud as my 2 year old was rapt by the story and would proclaim "Oh no!" Or "Mr Penguin!!" at appropriate moments and admonishing me if I wanted to take a break between chapters!

We loved reading another adventure from Mr Penguin and his friends (especially Colin, the kung-fu spider). It's a comedy adventure, Mr Penguin is flying over Europe with some precious cargo that he has rescued when he and the gang crash into a mountain. They encounter some new friends in the village of Schneedorf (I love the image of them drinking hot chocolate in a cosy bakery!) but there seems to be a problem - all the rodents have disappeared. Together with their new friends Dieter and Liesl they gradually solve the mystery and bring back order - but who are B.U.M.? Lots of funny moments and brilliant illustrations. There's also plenty about being brave (even when all you want is a fish finger sandwich) and challenging gender stereotypes. Great chapter book for new readers.

What can I say! Alex loves this book. He is a little to small to read it himself yet but the story is so engaging and funny. Lots of twists and turns to the story leaving us wanting to read more when it should be bed time. Would definitely recommend and looking to get the other books in the series.

My 7 year old Son loved this book and read it himself a chapter at a time.  The text is a good size that is not overly daunting for a child to read to themselves, printed with colour theme of orange, black and white pages.
He loved that there was suspense and mystery throughout and each each chapter left you wanting more.  He described it as a good mix of humour, mystery, with a few scary bits.
The story is about the adventure of Mr Penguin and his sidekick Colin and the mystery they have to solve in finding everyone's missing pets.
My Son's favourite character was Colin the spider who writes everything down even when he doesn't know what to say.
Another great book from Alex T Smith, look forward to further books.

This is such a fantastic book! My boy of 6yrs old absolutely loved it. It's really well written with superb descriptions and very atmospheric. The illustrations are beautiful and my boy really loved staring at the machines and all the intricate details of them. My boy loved when the plane crashed, thought the spider with his Kung Fu skills was amazing, loved the hypnotic machine and we both laughed out loud in some sections of the book. I thought the penguin was so funny and he made me laugh lots! This is my boys first detective story and it was fab. Going to buy this book now for lots of his friends for birthday/Christmas and I would highly recommend it!

My 7 year old son really enjoyed this story, and I enjoyed reading it to him. As with all Alex T Smith books it is a great story delivered in a quirky way! Fantastic illustrations, an exciting storyline (the only aspect my son didn’t enjoy was the way the baddie was introduced - until you got further into the book there were what appeared to be odd extracts that didn’t add to the storyline. It all tied in nicely in the end but they interrupted the flow of the story a bit with how these extracts were introduced).

I thought this book was really funny and exciting. I like Colin the Spider best because he can do Kung Fu and is the real hero of the story. Mr Penguin is always a bit scared and only thinks of fishfinger sandwiches. Together with their friends they try to solve the mystery of the missing rodents in Schneedorf-on-the-Peak.
I also liked the illustrations and how the letters were printed in different writing.
I chose this book because I love Claude the dog and I still like him a little bit better.
