'Kiran
Millwood Hargrave creates a spellbinding world of magic,
myth and adventure' EMMA CARROLL

Forbidden
to leave her island, Isabella dreams of the faraway lands her cartographer
father once mapped. When her friend disappears, she volunteers
to guide the search. The world beyond the walls is a monster-filled
wasteland - and beneath the dry rivers and smoking mountains,
a fire demon is stirring from its sleep. Soon, following
her map, her heart and an ancient myth, Isabella discovers the true
end of her journey: to save the island itself.

Beautiful,
thrilling and magical, Kiran Millwood Hargrave's debut novel
has all the makings of a modern classic.

Isabella lives with her Da, a cartographer who used to travel and who longs to do so again, on the island of Joya. Everyone there lives in fear of the ruthless Governor Adori and his men, and are forbidden from leaving their village.

When Isabella's best friend disappears, she embarks on a journey to find her. Using an ancient map and her knowledge of the stars, she travels through the terrifying forbidden territories and discovers that the myths her Da has told her all her life, might have more truth in them than she could ever have imagined!
I adore the cover, with it's gorgeous silhouette surrounded by magic and wonder. On opening the book you discover that each page is beautifully designed, and the maps throughout are charted to guide you through the enchantment and adventure.

The story reads like a fairytale of old. Spellbinding narrative that captures the imagination and captivates the reader, propelling them heart and soul into the tale.

Incredibly brave and loyal characters battle against evil both familiar and unknown. Friendships are tested, as malevolent forces cause death and destruction.

The Girl of Ink and Stars made me smile, laugh ( wait until you meet Miss La ) and cry. It shattered my heart but left me with a tear stained smile and hope in my heart. This book is a must read for everyone with a sense of adventure, a love of magic and fairy tales, and for those who never stop dreaming.

Isabella is a mapmaker's daughter - ink flows through her veins.  But she's forbidden to leave her village on the coast of Joya to explore the uncharted areas of the island.  But then a young girl is attacked in the orchard and Isabella's best friend (and the cruel Governor's daughter) goes missing.

Feeling responsible for her friend's disappearance, Isabella is determined to lead the search party.  She's also determined to explore the Forbidden Territories and map the areas her father wasn't able to.  She soon discovers a secret hidden within her mother's precious map which will guide her as she's forced to navigate the deadly labyrinth hidden deep below the island where the mythical fire demon, Yote, is said to live.  The map, along with her knowledge of the stars and the brave Arinta, are the keys to her survival and the survival of the entire island.
When I started reading this book, I was immediately transported to a faraway and magical land.  Star-spun maps, myth and magic await anyone who joins Isa on her journey to save her friend and, ultimately, her whole community.
Kiran Millwood Hargrave has woven together  a gripping tale of friendship, magic and adventure which will hold its reader captivated til the very end.
I would absolutely recommend this book to anyone who's a fan of Katherine Rundell or Philip Pullman.

I found this book thoroughly gripping and there were some real hair-tingling moments for me whilst reading it. The language is exquisite throughout and the characterisation of a strong female heroine was superb. Have been eagerly recommending this book to older pupils in school and have ordered copies for our school library.

This book is one of my all time favourite books. I literally couldn't put it down! A real page-turner. It is about a girl, called Isabella, who wants to be like her dad who is a cartographer, so when Isabella and her best friend, Lupe get into a fight, all sorts of bad things happen. Including, Lupe running away. In spite of this, Isabella uses her map skills to help find her. I would recommend this book to anyone who would like a proper adventure book. I hope you like it as much as I did.

What a gorgeous magical book. I would highly recommend this to children who enjoy a story with a message, a moral, a little bit of magic and a traditional story. Try it for yourself, suitable for 8 + and adults too!

As an adult reader, there's nothing that I love more than the occasional dip in to the world of children's literature. I love the adventure, I love that there is usually a strong friendship with fierce loyalty, and I love that there's often a message that comes with these stories. The Girl of Ink and Stars hit the mark on all of those counts.

This is my all time favourite book.
It's magical, adventurous and beautifully written.
The main character is Isabella, she goes on a journey to find her friend Lupe, the Governor's daughter.
The characters were adventurous and kind.
I think Isabella is courageous and wonderful because she risks her life for Lupe.

You will never know where stories and maps can take you if you don't read this stunning debut novel.A test of love, self-belief and friendship, this book is sure to transport you to places beyond your imagination. It has all the qualities of a tale that will stand out on any bookshelf and stay with your heart even when you remember reading this months back. It has an air of mythology to it which draws you deeper into this cleverly woven story. In three words this book is heartfelt, ambiguous and an adventure that will never be forgotten. I have never read another book like this (and as it is so amazing I am not sure that I will) but I would recommend it to fans of Emma Carroll and Sarah Driver as their writing also holds the key to something special.

Winner of the Waterstones Children Book Prize 2017 comes a stunning debut novel from Kiran Millwood Hargrave, The Girl of Ink and Stars. Set in the beautifully imagined parallel world, the Isle of Joya, comes an enthralling fantasy-adventure tale, as Isabella, a truly fierce and courageous heroine, sets out on an unforgettable journey to the island’s Forbidden Territories to save her closest friend. But beneath the hidden caves, black forests and smoking mountains, a legendary fire demon is stirring from its sleep.. Kiran’s language is rich and lyrical and the design is beautifully presented inside and out. From maps to margin illustrations, Kiran’s own use of cartography within the pages adds a whole other layer of magic. Steeped in mythology, shrouded in mystery and submerged in magic, Kiran creates a beautiful tale of wonder, friendship and finding your way.
Perfect for fans of Philip Pullman, Katherine Rundell and Cornelia Funke, The Girl of Ink and Stars is a tale that will stay with you long after the stars have gone to sleep.

For the heroine of this adventure story, Isa,  what starts out as the search for her missing friend Lupe turns into a mission to save a lot more. The island is ruled by a ruthless and greedy governor who also happens to be Lupe's father. Under his rule Isa's village of Gromera and the surrounding area has been cut off from the rest of the island, known as the "Forgotten Territories". To find Lupe, Isa must venture into the unknown...

I really liked how the book was written. The language is very discriptive and adds another dimension to the adventurous action side of the book. Isa is a very strong and likeable character that you really feel for as the story unfolds. As a warning, there are some sad bits in the story but it is mainly gripping.

If you like adventure stories with strong female characters then this book is for you.

I read this myself over the summer holidays to see which pupils in my class I thought it would be most suitable for. I really enjoyed it. Although some of the plot is a little predictable for an adult I could see that my pupils would be thoroughly engaged. I particularly liked that fact that the main character is a strong minded girl as this is something which is a little lacking in children's fiction. Two weeks back at school and there's already a waiting list to read it!

I actually thought this book was pants.  I didn't feel that it was that well written, and it was boring.  The characters weren't very likeable and the story was lacklustre.  Wouldn't recommend or read again.

This book came highly recommended by a number of people, and therefore I read it with great anticipation. It would seem to be a book that usually is the perfect genre for me; however, after an intriguing start to the story, I found that the characters were a bit two dimensional and the plot of the story was incredibly thin and repetitive. I got very bored about half way through as you could so easily predict what was going to happen next. I am interested to read another book by this author to see if it is her style of writing that I just don't agree with or the story itself. Interestingly, a number of women have read this book and enjoyed it, perhaps it is more appealing to women readers?
