This is a wonderful book about the death of a pet, and how we can help people who are feeling very sad about this. Smoky belongs to Alfie's neigbours the McNallies but he's getting very old and sadly dies. Bob McNally is particularly upset about it and doesn't feel like celebrating his birthday but Alfie and his family help mum Jean and daughter Maureen put on a special yet understated little party for him. The death is dealt with very gently and also quite matter of fact (there was no mention of heaven, which we appreciated as a non-religious family). The families are sad and say goodbye to Smoky and it's made clear that it's ok to be upset about these things. There is a lot of kindness in this book, and like the other Alfie books, it feels like it could be your family too so easy to identify with.

My four-year-old is a huge fan of the Alfie series and we often read three or four of them at bedtime each evening at the moment. This book deals with the death of a neighbour's cat and how the cat's owner is particularly upset by it. It mentions death in quite a straightforward way which is good for small children (and everyone probably!). Alfie and his family plan a surprise party to cheer up the sad cat owner, Bob McNally, and it cheers him up. They also buy him a replacement cat which seems a bit soon but I suppose it's only a story! We love the Alfie books for the way they convey how smaller details of small children's lives can actually be big drama.
