The first title in the new "Usborne Very First Reading" series, designed for younger children to introduce them to reading together with their parents. Parents and children take turns to read from the page (the text clearly marked for who should be reading) and as the books progress in the series the adults read less and less and the child more and more. There are puzzles at the end to check the child's understanding of the text and guidance notes for the parents. Beautiful illustrations help to motivate beginner readers.

My 5yo and I like book. The story is a simple pirate treasure hunt but is structured so the reading can be shared - the adult reads one side and the child reads the other.  Aimed at first readers, my 5yo can now read it all himself.  A great format with engaging illustration giving plenty to talk about.  Had fun questions at the end to match words to pictures, find rhyming words, and to talk about what happened in the story/what could happen next in their own words.

My son has just started to get books from school to read. The books from school haven't been that interesting, so I picked up this one from the library because we usually love Usborne books. And yet again we weren't disappointed, they have a different approach from the ones from school which I loved: on the left page the adult reads the text and on the right the child reads the text. Perfect! This way I think the story is more interesting, it's a nice bonding between the parent and the child and the kid doesn't get tired of reading everything. At the end there isn't just a list of ideas of activities to do with the kid related to the book, but there are also some "puzzles" to fix even more the words used, some related to understanding the story, rhyming and recognizing what some words mean.  This book specifically is related to the first set of phonics that my son learned in school and didn't have almost any tricky words.

We bought this to read alongside the books my daughter is bringing home from reception. The illustrations are fun, and the words are pitched at the right level for sounding out. It has really helped my daughter gain confidence in reading.
