Part of the Tom Fletcher Book Club 2018!

The first book by brilliant new comic author, Will Mabbitt, shortlisted for the Branford Boase award 2016.

--------------

When Mabel Jones unknowingly commits 'The Deed' she finds herself swiftly bundled into a sack and carried off to the pirate ship the Feroshus Maggot!

Crewed by the strangest bunch of pirates you would ever want to meet, and captained by the dreaded Idryss Ebeneezer Split (a wolf with a false leg carved from a human thighbone, a rusty cutlass sheathed in his belt and a loaded pistol tucked in his pants with no fear of the consequences), the Feroshus Maggot whisks Mabel Jones off on the adventure of a lifetime.

This book was recommended to people who are fans of Lemoney Snickett and it was spot on. The story was full of humour and adventure. Plenty of jokes to appeal to the target age group (which I found funny anyway!) and the illustrations were absolutely fantastic - as was the entire layout and presentation of the book. We really enjoyed reading this as our bedtime story but I think our little one is a bit too young for it at the moment. I can't wait to share it with her. It was an absolute pleasure to read.

The Unlikely Adventures of Mabel Jones tells the story of a little girl called Mabel who is bagged in the dead of night by a pirate loris for doing The Deed. She is carried through a portal to board a pirate ship, the Feroshus Maggot, upon which she encounters a motley crew of pirate animals, kept cruelly in check by a nasty wolf, Captain Idryss Ebenezer Split. Being a GIRL, Mabel's fate is to walk the Greasy Pole of Certain Death but a particular skill saves her and she is hoisted back on board. Thus follows a ripe old pirate adventure with Mabel at the helm of collecting four pieces of X, that when fitted together with the captain's fifth piece form a key that will unlock treasure. Many dangers await Mabel but she rises to the challenge using her very best assets of sneakiness, cleverness and bravery, often offset by a good old dollop of pirate bad luck. The stakes are high for Mabel - for the X key is not only a key to treasure, it is also a lock to the comet and the portal that will take her home. This is a story that grips from the very first page with hilarious back to front concepts like, 'What wasn't that noise'. Will Mabbitt never lets up for a moment the brilliant attention to piratey-style detail which makes this book such fun. The reader is drawn into the story again and again including via the use of Ross Collins' eye-catching illustrations. There is just the right balance of goo and gore not to make it too frightening but to make it a proper old pirate tale. For example, the chopping off of the silent loris' hand is a theme carried throughout the book, initially as a dire consequence of crossing the captain and later as a useful prop. The character's are all unique ranging from the dastardly, Count Anselm Klank, to the posh piggy-pirate, Milton Melton-Mowbray (a personal favourite). If you love a good old pirate adventure then this one's definitely for you. And if you usually don't then give it a go, this book is written with such verve, you won't be disappointed.

This book was absolutely fabulous. It had my three daughters ages 5, 8 and 10 absolutely hooked. It's major downside was that they giggled too much at bedtime... And even I enjoyed it so much that perhaps we stayed up too late reading it!!
Even the dastardly characters are written with humour so what is actually a fairly dark plot becomes light hearted and jolly. Would not hesitate to recommend.

We won this book through Toppster and my son wouldn't pick it up because he thought it was not his cup of tea. I started reading it to them and bedtime and we became hooked. A funny page turner for boys and girls of about 7 plus with some really lovely pictures in (many books lack the pictures).

My daughter was too young I think - she struggled to concentrate enough to follow it as a bedtime story. I enjoyed it though, I like the fact the pages looked interesting and the adventures were humorous.
