Not long after arriving home from a holiday to Japan, thirteen year-old Hanna's life starts to undergo a dramatic change. Her Caucasian dad has begun seeing another woman. Her Japanese mum is distraught but they are too hard up to divorce. Returning to school in September, Hanna is plagued by insidious bullying. Friends turn into enemies and Hanna becomes more and more isolated in the playground. Until, one day, Lilli, a girl she was best friends with before she moved to London, joins the school and helps her to 'fight back'. Lilli will stop at nothing to help Hanna sort out her problems. Getting to know Lilli better, Hanna discovers Lilli has a 'wound' that needs healing and so she sets out to help reunite Lilli's estranged parents. As domestic and home life lurch from one crisis to the next, Hanna makes a discovery about Lilli's father that will help solve a crime and give Hanna the confidence to show people what she's really made of.
