At first Ben Hopwood finds life in the London Docklands during the London Blitz difficult to get used to after moving there from the countryside with his parents. His father is a mathematician working on code breaking for the government. When his mother and father go missing the boy has to call on all his resources in order to find them. Ben's father's friend from the British Secret Service suspects a German spy ring is responsible. Will Ben be able to save his parents lives by a combination of his own efforts, those of his new found school friends and the eccentric ghost of his great grandfather?
