This illustrated book recreates the world of the famous Elizabethan playhouse, the Globe, in which Shakespeare's plays were originally performed. Based on current research, it describes the architecture of the Globe and the lively stage productions. Shakespeare himself is made real as an actor and theatre-owner as well as a playwright. John Russell Brown is both a scholar and director of plays. For 15 years he was an Associate Director of the National Theatre in London. He is the editor of the "Oxford Illustrated History of Theatre". This is a source for the study of Shakespeare, highlighted in Key Stages 3 of English and 2/3 of History in the National Curriculum.
