Ling and Aidan are two friends who live in the same neighbourhood in Singapore in the 1950s to 1970s. As they explore during this period of social change, they see people learning a new national language; health inspectors catching street hawkers; and families moving out of kampongs. Ling and Aidan see five scenes from paintings in the social realism style, helping readers understand how everyday people lived in Singapore at the time.
