A long time ago in the Jiayi Kingdom, there lived a devoted and hard-working boy named Shanzi. Shanzi was always in the forest to collect flowers and fruits and play with animals where the white deer became his best friend. However, the king of Jiayi hunted everywhere for the white deer's skin. To protect the deer herd, Shanzi fell off the cliff and dropped into the lake. The king was so regretful that he jumped into the lake and rescued Shanzi. Shanzi then asked the king to put aside his greed and give peace back to the white deer community and the forest. Everyone was touched by Shanzi’s action including the gods and animals who were guarding the forest. What will happen to Shanzi? By recreating this picture book of the legendary story, children can join us in re-examining the relationship between man and nature.
