A laugh-out-loud pirate adventure from the stellar picture-book partnership of Julia Donaldson and David Roberts. The Troll longs for a juicy goat to eat - but he's stuck with boring old fish for supper. Bother! Meanwhile, Hank Chief and his pirate crew love fish, but without a decent recipe their slimy, soggy dinner is even worse. If only they could find their buried treasure and pay for a ship's cook . . . but it seems they've sailed to the wrong island. Again. Watch the fun unfold as two very different worlds collide in The Troll , a gloriously comic story from Julia Donaldson and David Roberts, the creators of the highly acclaimed Tyrannosaurus Drip . Enjoy the other stories by Julia Donaldson and David Roberts: Tyrannosaurus Drip, Jack and the Flumflum Tree, The Flying Bath and The Cook and the King .

In this book two seemingly separate stories become entwined. There's a troll living under a bridge (because that's where trolls are supposed to live). He is desperate to eat a lovely juicy goat but all he has to eat is fish and he hates fish.

Meanwhile there are some pirates living out at sea on a ship (because that's where pirates are supposed to live). They love fish but unfortunately nobody on the ship is able to cook fish and it's always a horrible, slimy mess.

The troll leaves his bridge in search of a delicious goat and the pirates are travelling from island to island in search of buried treasure.

This is quite a wordy book so I think it's best enjoyed with children four and up. When I read it to my daughters when they were younger they didn't quite get it. But now they really enjoyed it and found the twist at the end, hilarious. They also love the illustrations.

We are huge Julia Donaldson fans so we always love finding new reads! We enjoyed the two different scenarios throughout the book, and enjoyed acting like the troll and the pirates.

This is a great book. I haven't bored of reading it yet and I have read it many times! It's about a troll looking for something different to eat than fish! I love putting on the different voices and the illustrations are detailed and interesting.

This is my favourite Julia Donaldson book and a favourite of my class too. With the two different settings it keeps the children listening as they are excited to see what happens next. It is very humerous aswell which stops them from getting bored. The illustrations are fantastic and help to tell the story visually. Always a must have when I'm teaching key stage 1.

My son loves this book at the moment, I think it goes on a bit but maybe that's because I've read it lots. The illustrations are good and it is a funny book.

My daughter chose the book because of its cover. We are huge Julia Donaldson fan so it was a must.
A twist on the billy goat gruff story is one part of the story and the other part is about the pirates. Both trying to do what is expected of them.
A funny story how the troll throws away the gold and meets the pirates.

My daughter didn't enjoy this book quite as much as other Julia Donaldson book but enjoyed it for a bedtime story.

My three year old twin girls are big fans of Julia Donaldson. This book is jolly good fun, but it is no Stick Man. It is a mix of the troll under the bridge from The Three Billy goats gruff (it really helps if they know this story already) and a ragtag band of pirates. It took a few reads for my girls and I to really 'get' this book and start to enjoy it. If you read it with funny voices and lots of gusto it is a wonderful experience. The illustrations aren't pretty but are funny and expressive, the lives of the troll and the pirates aren't flowers and snowflakes but rather fish guts and fish bones. A funny and quirky tale.

Two stories that ultimately intertwine. The troll (an accomplished chef ... who is fed up of eating fish) moves from bridge to bridge along the river further towards the sea in search of a billy-goat-gruff to eat..... meantime a band of pirates sail from island to island in search of treasure in order to pay for a chef to join their motley crew. The pirates find their treasure.... but are at first disappointed with their find (its the troll, who's hiding in the treasure chest in order to capture a goat....)...... until they find out he can cook ! But the troll still cannot escape cooking fish !
It's not one of the best Donaldson books.... but my 3yr old is getting to know traditional fairy tales... so stories that are a mashup / play on knowledge of these tales are popular at the moment. And who doesnt like a book with pirates in it ?

Not one of Julia Donaldson's best books, this is a story told in prose rather than rhymes. There are essentially two tales here, that of a troll looking for food and a gang of pirates looking for treasure - stories which meet aand intertwine. The pictures are delightful, but unfortunately this is not one that we re-read that often.
