Toppsta's two-year-old Blaine reviews the new Poppy and Sam books

Test

Two-year-old Toppsta reviewer Blaine was the lucky winner of a giveaway we ran earlier this year to receive all SEVEN of the new Poppy and Sam books. Read on to find out what he thought of each book…

Poppy and Sam's Easter Egg Hunt
Blaine loved the concept of this book which is searching for Easter eggs; we read this book after Blaine went on an Easter egg trail and he was very excited to keep on hunting for Easter eggs which helped carry on the magic of Easter. The cut out shapes through the peep holes on each page had us fooled when we were looking for the eggs and Blaine loved pointing out the apparent eggs. When we turned over the page and he realized it wasn't an egg he shouted 'Oh no!'. He also loved tracing his little finger on the tracks to follow the trail.

Poppy and Sam's Fingerprint Activities
With Blaine being off for the Easter holidays this Fingerprint Activity Book has been amazing in keeping Blaine entertained. We have never tried any activity book like this before and we have found it very simple and fun to use. Each page has different scenes for your little one to decorate such as adding finger prints to poppy's blanket with rockets and planets, filling the sky with snowflakes and adding steam to a train. You don't need any extra materials such as water or paint brushes which is great if you want to take this book on a day out with you.

It has its own brightly coloured ink pad which has seven colours to choose from. Blaine sometimes became frustrated when he wanted to use the same finger to paint with but wanted a different colour, I found that thankfully it was extremely easy to clean off the ink with wet wipes or with water. There are also simple instructions on each page on how to create different shapes and animals with your fingertip which, after showing Blaine first how to do them, he could easily create these himself.

Poppy and Sam's Animal Sounds
Blaine loves this book; the buttons are super easy for little ones to press by themselves.  It helps toddlers and young children learn to associate what sounds come from what animals and farm vehicles. Not only can you search for the little yellow duck on each page but if you have a tractor loving child like my little boy you can also look for a little red toy tractor on each page too. On the last page there's a surprise for your little one – once they press the button all the animals start making a noise and a tune starts to play. Every time Blaine hears the tune at the end of the book he starts singing ‘Old Mac Donald Had a Farm’.

Poppy and Sam's Animal Hide-and Seek
Blaine loved finding where each animal was hiding in this book, this edition has so much happening on every page which makes it fun to read over and over without it getting dull. It has sturdy flaps for little hands to open up, loads of different textures to touch which Blaine loved feeling; he then would ask me to feel the texture too. The scratchy thistle is a favourite of his, you also can search for the little yellow duck and count how many animals there are on each page.

Poppy and Sam's Bedtime
It's the end of a busy day on Apple Tree Farm, Poppy and Sam want to say goodnight to all the animals before bed. This book is a touchy-feely edition, Blaine loved petting all the animals and saying good night to them before they went to bed.

Poppy and Sam's Bedtime has helped Blaine learn to associate what each farm animals look like, what sounds they make, and what different farm animals there are. Blaine has a short attention span with books at the moment but this book kept him engaged the whole time; he couldn't wait to turn the thick cardboard page (perfect for rough handling from little hands) and feel the next animal and also lift the little cardboard flaps which have surprises hidden behind them.

Overall children will love the tactile interactive aspects of this edition which really help them to get involved with the book. There's also the bonus of searching for the yellow duck on each page. The brightly coloured illustrations are fun and cheerful to look at, there’s lots to look at on each page which me and Blaine liked to talk about, such as him telling me about the duck pond and what sort of animals you can find there. This book is perfect as a bedtime story but it’s lovely to share at any time of the day.

Poppy and Sam's Animals Sticker Book
What young child doesn't like stickers? Blaine loved picking each sticker out, when he decided which sticker he wanted he automatically told me what the animal was and then started making the sound that specific animal makes. There's not only farm animal stickers in this book but also people, smaller creatures you'd find in the wild and items you'd find on a typical farm.

There are lots of different farmyard scenes such as stables, a summer farm show and snowy fields for your little one to choose from when deciding where they want to place their stickers. The book is fantastic for little ones which are indecisive about where they originally stuck their sticker, if they don't like where they originally stuck their sticker they can easily pick it off and place it somewhere else.

Poppy and Sam's Magic Painting Book
Blaine was so surprised with this book, he loved adding water to the pages and was shocked when vibrant colours magically appeared on the page. There are so many different scenes for your child to pick from to paint including flying kites, a scarecrow, collecting eggs and feeding the pigs. There is also a handy flap which you can use to stop the paint seeping through to the page beneath which is fantastic for little ones who can be generous with the amount of water they put on their brush.
