A former teacher, journalist, and rock musician, Walker has been honored as an author by the National Council for the Social Studies, the Children's Book Council, and Storytelling World. His books Giants! and Big Men, Big Country were named to the Aesop Accolade List of the American Folklore Society and the American Bookseller Pick of the Lists. His book for National Geographic Remember Little Bighorn was a SLJ Best Book of the Year, a Notable Social Studies Trade Book, and an ALA Notable Book for Older Readers.
