Padraic Colum was born in Longford, Ireland in 1881. He was a natural storyteller: lyrical rhythm and musical pace run through all his many tales for children, which have been loved for generations. He was awarded the Regina Medal in 1961 by the Catholic Literary Association, for his contribution to children's literature. He died in 1972, leaving a wonderful legacy of story collections which continue to enchant and delight.
