John Patrick Byrne attended the Glasgow School of Art before beginning his career as a book designer and subsequent success as a painter of "faux-naif" images. He designed album covers for The Beatles, Billy Connelly, and Gerry Rafferty, and went on to write, design, and direct many stage and film productions, including The Slab Boys, Scotch & Wry, and Tutti Frutti . An associate of the Royal Scottish Academy, his paintings hang in The Scottish National Portrait Gallery.
