Gary D. Schmidt is a professor of English at Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He is the author of, most recently, Lizzie Bright and the Buckminster Boy --which won Newbery and Printz Honors--as well as First Boy and The Wednesday Wars . Schmidt lives in a 150-year-old farmhouse in Alto, Michigan, where he is a swinger of birches and a mender of walls.
