This summer, Matilda is going on holiday with her friends, the Jolley-Rogers. Their destination is the island of Scurvy Sands - a favourite holiday destination for pirates.

When Matilda arrives, the swashbuckling residents are not too impressed with her. She has clean teeth, tidy clothes and doesn't smell like she's been at sea for six months without washing - she's definitely no pirate. But when Matilda discovers the secret of the legendary treasure of Scurvy Sands, the pirates decide that maybe some lubbers aren't so bad.

A scurvy sequel to the bestselling The Pirates Next Door.

Amazing illustrations! This book is a continuation of The Pirates Next Door, but can also be read separately. In this one the roles are inverted and here Matilda is the one in a "foreign territory", she goes on holidays to an island with the Jolly Rogers, it's a pirates' holiday place, so the pirates think it's strange when they notice a girl there that isn't a pirate. They start complaining about her,  until she figures out where the treasure is hidden on the island which they were looking for for years and then they like her and recognize her as part of their own, even with her differences. My son really enjoyed seeing the map, their holiday island and how they find the treasure, which also has a fold out page, but he didn't really understand who the pirates were complaining about. He also thought it was a bit strange not to see the cover image in more detail during the book. We'll come back to this book other times, specially to talk about so many details in the illustrations and when he's a bit older, I think he'll understand better the logic of Matilda to find the treasure.

This book was fantastic it was so well illustrated and really colourful. Every time my daughter and I pick it up she spots something different. A very good story which was easy to understand with the rhyming which runs through the book. Matilda the main character was such good fun to read about.

My son thinks Jonny Duddle is a fantastic illustrator. We have had his books since he was about two, so for a long time now. His favourite for a long time was King of Space. He said that he liked this book because of the detail and what you can find if you look carefully in the pictures. (Princess Kooki from the above book on the Arcade game machine/ monsters/rats/skulls etc) He thought the Privateer Dentist and Before/After pictures were quite funny. His favourite part was the overview of Scurvy Sands on the inside cover of picture book. Excellent follow up to Pirates Next Door, showing a mirror world to Dull-On-Sea, where the Jolley Rogers are no longer the outsiders.

Very enjoyable read. My 2 boys loved the story. I loved the underlying story about how appearances do not make you who you are. The illustrations were great, we loved the maps

This was such a fun story. And we laughed And laughed at my attempts at a pirate accent! My class loved hearing about the adventures of Matilda who is invited by her pirate penpal to go to Scurvy Sands - a pirate holiday park. Sadly the other holidaying pirates don’t believe that Matilda is a real pirate...she’s just not like them and she has to find a way to win them over!

I loved the way the story rhymes, though in some places it was a bit difficult to work out the rhythm that fit. And we all loved the bright pictures and fold out map and page partway through the book.

I read it to my own class of 5-6 year olds but am also going to share it with others who have been learning a topic on pirates this term

What a fantastic story book. The illustrations capture your attention and make you believe you are there in the story when you close you eyes and imagine! We enjoyed reading this together and took it to school to share with the class! If you are looking for an adventure packed book then this is the one to choose!

As soon as our book arrived we were reading it it starts very similar to the pirates next door. We get to meet Cap’n Ollie Day! On scurvy sands they get to ride on a rollercoaster, search for gold from Mad Jack McMuddle. There room smells of fish and chips and made out of old ships. The other kids on the island notice Matilda is not a pirate and it causes a bit of a stir. Matilda and Jim lad get an idea with a compass and a map and find the treasure. Matilda is then accepted they then set sail for her home.

Illustration is fantastic, so beautifully done with so much detail, something new to spot each time we read this book. A don’t judge someone by their appearance book, great storyline. Maybe for children who understand a long narrative, ages over six? A good “piratey” book
