Working up the courage to take a big, important leap is hard, but Jabari is almost absolutely ready to make a giant splash. In a sweet tale of overcoming your fears, debut author-illustrator Gaia Cornwall captures a moment at the swimming pool between a patient and encouraging father and a determined little boy you can't help but root for. Jabari is definitely ready to jump off the diving board. He's finished his swimming lessons and passed his swimming test, and he's a great jumper, so he's not scared at all. "Looks easy," says Jabari, watching the other kids take their turns. But when his dad squeezes his hand, Jabari squeezes back. He needs to figure out what kind of special jump to do anyway, and he should probably do some stretches before climbing up onto the diving board...

This is a delightful story about a little boy who really wants to jump from a diving board but his fear is holding him back. It provided opportunity for my children and I to discuss bravery, a positive attitude and being honest about your feelings.

Jabari can swim like me but I haven’t jumped off the diving board. I might jump off when I go on holiday. I like that Jabari is brown like me.

This book is all about finding the courage to do something a little bit scary. Jabari really wants to do the high dive but it looks a bit scary, with support from his dad and a little patience he finds he can do it after all. We really enjoyed some of the pictures showing what Jabari could see from the diving board and what the pool looked like from up high. The father in the story is very kind and patient, giving good advice and being there for Jabari. Not a very exciting story but good all the same.
