When their father is declared missing in action in Vietnam, eleven-year-old Holly Wade and her siblings, ten-year-old twins Judy and Crockett, are sent to live with their grandparents in the small town of Dimsdale, Massachusetts. Holly is miserable. Dimsdale is nothing like Boston, and other than the Wades, there are only two other African-American children in the entire school. Even worse, Grandpa and Grandma Wade live in an old junkyard! Then, Holly finds an scented pillow that transports her to a dream world - a world of good and evil forces, ancient curses, and powerful magic.
