The Atlas features 62 maps that describe the progressions of understanding for what students should know and be able to do with regards to the three dimensions of science as described by the Framework for K-12 Science Education, the Next Generation Science Standards, and other state standards based on the Framework. These maps describe how the elements of the dimensions can build upon each other and connect to one another over the course of a K–12 education. The maps are tools that give educators a special perspective on the standards in ways that can strengthen their work in curriculum, instruction, and assessment.
