With her magic paintbrush, Shen can paint steaming pots full of fish and oysters to feed the hungry people in her village. When the evil emperor commands Shen to paint gold for him, she is determined to keep her promise to paint only for the poor. In The Magic Paintbrush, Julia Donaldson's vibrant verse and Joel Stewart's beautiful illustrations bring fresh life to a traditional tale of how a little girl's integrity can withstand the corruption of power and greed.

A gorgeous book with watercolour illustrations that look oriental and intriging. The rhyming text flows beautifully retelling the old chinese fable of the magic brush. The children had lots of questions and enjoyed finding out more about the Chinese culture and dragons.

We loved this book and would most definitely recommend it.
My daughter loved the illustrations and also really understood the message of the story - how to stand up and stick to your principles and do what is right. In her words 'it's important to be confident and kind isn't it Mummy'.
The rhyming is clever, and made it really interesting but easy to listen to for my daughter.
Very enjoyable read for both myself and my daughter.

Shen is drawing pictures in the sand when she’s handed a magic paint brush, she’s warned never to paint for wealthy folk but only for the poor.
Shen goes on to help lots of village folk until an emporer try’s to get her to paint for him.
We loved shen’s clever idea to escape.
This is a beautifully illustrated book that’s reads so nicely. It’s an old favourite of ours.

We already knew this story and this is a great version of it. Shen, a Chinese girl gets given a magic paintbrush but not to be used for the rich. Shen finds that everything she draws comes to life. One day the emperor hears about this and asks her to draw a money, with consequences... It's a lovely book and written in the wonderful style of Julia Donaldson. Gorgeous illustrations and we really enjoyed it.
