A Case Study of Japanese Middle Schools - 1983-1998 is an excellent addition to the growing body of work in comparative mathematics education. Whitman's longitudinal case study is thorough, and informative, comparing Japanese mathematics curriculum and methods of instruction with those of American schools. Geometry, emphasis and neglect, form the most obvious points of difference, and the writer's findings have serious implications for the current crisis in mathematics education in American schools.
