A beautiful, emotionally satisfying look at how nothing is ever truly lost if you keep it in your heart...

When Sofia loses her beloved teddy after a day at the beach, she is heartbroken. But the sea saw it all, and maybe, just maybe, it can bring Sofia and her teddy back together. However long it may take...

Exquisite collage artwork is paired with an assured, moving text in this very special picture book.

The Sea Saw is a lovely story of the adventures of a bear with the help of the Sea after a little girl Sofia loses her bear on a trip to the beach. The children were  captivated by the story and you could see how they felt sad for the Sofia and the bear as it is a relatable topic for them as they tend to lose (misplace) their bears at preschool regularly so seeing it was just like seeing it on a much larger scale to them. Some of the children saw how Sofia was feeling and shared how they feel sad when they can't find their comforter toys. It was nice to be able to talk about this with them and so nice for them to see how the story ended and showing them that things will always be in your memories even if you don't have it and that things will work out in the end. I thought it was really great that we got to see both the bear and Sofia's story throughout the book as it gave the children an insight into how they were both feeling and it was such a lovely twist at the end, needed a bit of explaining to the young children but they got it once it was explained. The characters in the book were brilliant and so relatable for the children. It was great how we could see the emotions of all the characters really stand out and the colours of the illustrations which seemed to match the mood which helped the children understand how they may be feeling. The illustrations are gorgeous and the colours and pictures are very good at setting the scene. When the children saw the storm and how the colours of the book had darkened they really noticed and became increasingly worried for Sofia's bear. It was very cleverly and beautifully illustrated. The children enjoyed the story The Sea Saw and its the most I've seen them concentrate so hard on a story in a while, they tend to like funny or comforting stories but this one really made them think and it was lovely for them to share their opinions on what was happening. The Sea Saw is such a beautiful story and definitely one I'd recommend as it has a fantastic message to share and one to get the children thinking about!

What a lovely book. We enjoyed the illustrations and the sweet story of a lost bear returning home. We all have special toys in our house that mean as much as the bear in the story, and so loved the message that if they ever got lost they would stay with us in our hearts.

We loved this book. We have read other books by this author, so the book had a lot to live up to, it did not disappoint. Both my 4 year old and 8 year old enjoyed this equally.
Both girls loved the illustrations. The story was lovely, losing a beloved toy is very relatable. The journey through the story held both my kids avid attention. The end was lovely and made me quite tearful.
The message that nothing is lost if you keep it in your heart is particularly poignant at the moment as the girls lost their grandma recently.

What a lovely book, with really nice illustrations. A story about a little girl who goes on a trip with her dad and loses her favourite bear, as the sea washed the bear away it does have an interesting journey. A nice message too in this book is that nothing is ever lost if we keep it in our hearts.

We absolutely loved this book. What a gorgeous take of a little girl losing her bear and it was all good in the end. My little ones have comfort toys that they are attached too and really felt for the little girl when she lost hers. I loved the tale of the bears life and where he travels too. My girl thought the illustrations were great and my boy was really moved by the ending. Great book!!

A lovely book with nice illustrations, a bear gets lost and gets found years later by the granddaughter of the girl who lost it originally. The message is nothing gets lost if you keep it in your hearts but I am not sure that the message will get a cross to the age the book is meant for. However it is a lovely story.

This is a wonderful book with a lovely message. The story follows Sofia, her father and a very special bear. When Sofia and her father go to the beach they have a wonderful day. They have lots of food, fun and enjoy the lovely weather until a storm appears. In their hurry to escape the wind and rain Sofia's bear is lost and when she realises she is very sad indeed. Try as they might they cannot find the bear anywhere but luckily the sea saw what happened and tries its best to help. This is a very sweet book with a lot of underlying emotion. The bear is a very special bear to Sofia's family and I think a lot of children and adults alike will relate to this. The book itself has some lovely illustrations and is definitely one to treasure. We loved the ending but it may just bring a tear to your eye.

It was moving. The pictures were really detailed. I liked when Sofia found her bear again but I didn't like it when he got lost. I liked the italics.

This story gave me chills! My girls loved the illustrations and it was a great size book to read together all huddled up.
The idea is beautiful, that if you lose something over time it works it’s way back to you again. It’s a wonderful idea and certainly makes it easier to relieve the pain of a lost treasured toy to think it’s working it’s way back to you.
Highly recommended to anyone that is sentimental!

A poignant, beautifully illustrated book with the story sadly but also delightfully told.  Such tender language, with great personification/pathetic fallacy, muted, delicate drawings adorn the pages...

I think we all have a special ‘something’ that we cherish as do most children too...this is why this book is so relatable.

Lo found it very sad, we could feel it coming, we were waiting for it...I enjoyed it immensely. Good for 4 years+

This is such a brilliantly written, emotive read.
We admire Tom Percival’s work in our home and were very excited to read this. The young girl on the front cover is very fond of the teddy she’s holding but she sadly loses it. Teddy embarks on such a long journey. Will he ever reunite with his owner?
Sometimes things that are precious to you may get lost but one shouldn’t lose hope as you may well find it again.
Many children will be able to relate to Sofia and her fondness of teddy.
A lovely read.

This is a really sweet story about a girl called Sofia who loses her favourite teddy bear at the beach, and then the story continues to follow the journey the bear takes without Sofia and ends with the satisfying notion that nothing is ever truly lose if you keep it in your heart.  It's a short, sweet, feel good book.

Perhaps the girl has lost her mother, as the reader, you sense this, although it is not said.  Sofia is only seen with her father throughout the story.

I really liked the illustrations in this book, and although it's not immediately obvious, the artwork was created in partnership with The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam and it features many elements from over 50 art pieces from their collection. Google it, but basically, the author combined parts of pre-existing artwork to create the new art for his book, even Van Gogh is featured! It's a wonderful way of creating art, I loved the combined pieces, and use of textures etc within the book.

About Tom Percival

Tom Percival grew up in a remote and beautiful part of South Shropshire. On reflection this seemed rather more remote than beautiful, owing to the fact that he lived in a small caravan without electricity, mains water or any sensible form of heating. He thinks that he's probably one of the few people in his peer group to have learned to read by gas lam...
