Statistical methods in safety signal detection and data mining play an increasingly important role in the identification, investigation and further confirmation of safety problems that might be attributed to the use of medical products. Appropriate applications of these methods and their integration into routine practice in medical product development will ensure early detection of true safety signals, reduce the rate of false signals and false non-signals, and hence protect the health of consumers.
