The Medieval period was a fascinating time in British history. The landscape changed dramatically with the building of huge castles to control the land. Young noblemen learned the rules of chivalry and trained to become knights. The church became very powerful and was even feared by kings. It financed the construction of magnificent cathedrals and was the centre of art and learning. Most people were farmers who endured a hard life working on land owned by noblemen who in turn owed service to the king. It was a very bloody period with wars against the Irish, the Welsh and the Scots and a long war with France. There were crusades to the Holy Land and powerful lords fighting each other for power, or the throne of England. Our book begins at the time of the Norman conquest of England and ends at the start of the Tudor monarchy, with the defeat of Richard III by Henry VII at the Battle of Bosworth.
