Fred   may look ordinary, but sometimes people who  look  ordinary turn out to be  not very   ordinary at all ... because it just so happens that  Fred is a Wizard!

Sounds pretty great, right? Except that Fred is absolutely, completely, mind-boggingly TERRIBLE at magic. At school, he's stuck in a class of wizards half his age, feeling like a twit among tots. At home, he's endlessly teased by his siblings and always a disappointment to his parents. All Fred wants is to become a better wizard....

So when he hears about a competition to meet  Merlin  (yes, THE Merlin!) Fred knows it's his one chance to prove to his family that he's not the worst wizard in town. The catch? To win the competition he has to capture the tail of a   terrifying, fire-breathing lizard...

From Simon Philip, author of  You Must Bring a Hat  and  I Really Want the Cake  , and Sheena Dempsey, illustrator of  Dave Pigeon,   comes a tale full of magic and fun.

I loved this book and read it in a day as I couldn't put it down. I love Fred and the fact that he found it tricky being a wizard as I know now that even if I find stuff tricky I shouldn't give up trying to do it. This book follows Fred who's terrible at magic unlike the rest of his family. He hates that he's no good and decides after seeing a poster to try and meet merlin but he needs to get the tail of a lizard. I'll not spoil the story as its one to read and see if he does it

Wizard Vs Lizard is definitely a great book that I would recommend to ages 6 to 12 (but can be enjoyed by anyone).  Fred ,who is the main wizard, shows courage when his family doubt him in most things he does.  Simon Philip has done a fabulous job with the whole story also Sheena Dempsey has done great illustrations.

I loved reading this book and finished it in a day, it was so good to read. I liked Fred because he found being a wizard tricky and it made me think about some things that I find tricky...i wanted to say 'You can do it, Fred'. I hope that there are lots more books in this series as I would really enjoy reading them. I liked the illustrations a lot and they helped me to imagine what life was like for Fred. I would recommend it to my friends in Year Two.

My son quite enjoyed this book! It's about a boy who is in the "wizarding" world but not a very good wizard and because of this has some hard times with his family. He then enters a competition that his family didn't think he would be capable of winning, but actually, Fred is a very smart boy and manages not to get eaten by the lizard. We've read it during the last week for bedtime and my son is already excited to read the next one coming out in Autumn. I think it's a nice book to read to kids before introducing them to Harry Potter, since it doesn't have too many characters and it isn't a scary story, also there are some nice illustrations that helps with the kid's imagination of what is happening in the book.

This book is as enchanting as a magic spell.  Fred is such a lovable wizard yet his family and friends, except for Marvin, see him as a hopeless case.  Fred is very aware of this and is determined to make everyone proud of him.  He enters a competition to meet Merlin, the supreme Wizard, but he has to capture the tail of a scary, fire-breathing lizard.  The book is so well-written and encourages all children, who may feel they are not as good at things as they would like to be, to be positive and find something they can excel at.  Eirys loved the pictures and felt Fred's highs and lows as he goes all out to complete the task set before him.

We read this over a few nights at bedtime and it went down well. My daughter enjoyed the story, and found the idea of a wizard who wasn't very good quite funny. It has a few pictures, but not many and all black and white so a good level of concentration is needed! Nice to read together with my 5 year old, and she will be able to manage it herself when she is older.

A great level book for children that enjoy Harry Potter, but are not ready for the books. The book is based around a wizard who is not very good at wizardry. We really enjoyed sharing the reading if this.

This has taken us a week to read at bedtimes. One she will definitely grow into. She did enjoy it but I may wait until she is a little older before I get more in the series. It's a really funny children's book perfect for primary school age. Fred is a wizard who hasn't quite got the hang of it yet. I liked Merlin featuring in the book. The little black and white pictures kept Sophie interested and she liked a chapter per night.
