This book presents new trends in organisational structure and human resource management in Japanese manufacturing companies using new technology. It is based on a study of 183 manufacturing companies and interviews with 11 companies. Organisational change in loosely structured to tightly structured companies, due to the spread of systematised technology, is examined.Loosely structured organisation is more suited to the multi-product small-volume production system by reforming the traditional style of Japanese management, such as the seniority wage system and lifelong employment. It also promotes teamwork on the shop-floor and flat management organisation, which can be applied to management outside Japan.
