A hairy mammoth takes a cheeky little baby on a thrilling ride through a moonlit landscape populated by a sabre-toothed tiger, a leaping hare, a laughing hyena and even, just maybe, by a big brown bear . . . But where are they going? And what has it to do with the baby's scribblings on the cave wall? Created by the critically acclaimed author Julia Donaldson and Kate Greenaway medal winner Emily Gravett, Cave Baby celebrates the messy creativity of babies!

A winning combination of a Julia Donaldson story with Emily Gravatt illustrations this is a very appealing book for children. A cave baby discovers a paint pot and redecorates his cave, which does not please his parents... There is much to enjoy in this story, such as the innocent creativeness of children, that what is 'naughty' to one person is encouraged by amother, there are subtle pictures of bears in the landscapes (can you spot them all?) and constellations in the sky. A great tale that your child is sure to love.

Cave baby gets his hands on his mum's paints and adds to her cave paintings in their home ... and gets into trouble. That night a woolly mammoth takes cave baby..... past all the animals he'd seen his mum draw on the cave walls.... is he being taken to be fed to the big bear? No the mammoth likes his more abstract art, and wants him to decorate their cave. A lovely story that beauty is in the eye of the beholder - whats not appreciated by some is loved by others. It also provides an inroad for discussing - why mummy doesnt want painting on the walls (even though she herself has "decorated them" and why "adding" to another persons work without asking is not a good idea. Lovely illustrations.

This book is a firm favourite in our house. My 4 year old often requests it now for his baby brother. My 1 year old adores the illustrations as he points and squeals at certain colourful parts of the story.
We love a rhyming story that can be remembered by little ones the more you read it.
The baby in this story makes Oliver giggle as he is very cheeky.
Definitely one to add to your collection!

Such a great story with brilliant rhyming words that had Lil transfixed the entire way through. Wasn't a scary story and had a nice end. Fun to read although pages a little dark at times for bedtime.

As usual with Julia Donaldson books we loved it. It's a really creative story in an unusual setting. The rhyming is easy to read. The story has a lovely ending with a twist and the illustrations are beautiful.

Charming story with fabulous illustrations. It's a story about a cave baby who is bored and starts to paint the cave of a variety of animals.
The colourful illustrations and rhythmic flow of this book make it an interesting and enjoyable read to everyone.

poor cave baby gets told off for painting on the cave walls but the animals love his artwork and they take him on an adventure to create some masterpieces. Really nice story to read to the kids, and also remind them not to draw on our walls

This is a gorgeous book. It has the wonderful sing song feel of a Julia Donaldson book and some fantastically colourful illustrations by Emily Gravett. Cave Baby is bored so uses his big imagination and a brush and a pot to decorate and enhance the cave paintings inside his home. However his parents are not happy with his artistic changes and they tell him off and clean up the 'mess'. When Cave Baby can't sleep one night a big grey mammoth enters the cave and takes him on a journey passed lots of different animals. Although he is scared the adventure turns out to be lots of fun and very colourful. We really enjoyed this book and love the imaginative illustrations as well as the lovely message this book has. Julia Donaldson never disappoints with her amazing stories.

Another great Julia Donaldson book! We got this as part of a set by Julia Donaldson. Some if the books, including this one I had never heard off before, so it was new to me!
Both the girls were aware of this book before we started reading it so I knew it was popular at school. The story was very simple with little narrative. This made it easier for me to read with Eleanor as I got her to read the shorter pages to me. The story is about a cave baby that wants to draw but his cave mum and dad don't appreciate his 'style' . His friend wooly mammoth takes him to his cave and lets the baby paint as much as he wants.
It's a lovely story, nice and short for bedtimes and the illustrations are fantastic. Bright and busy and eye catching.
A great read and another lovely story by Julia Donaldson.

This is one of our regular bedtime stories; it's the tale of a Cave Baby who gets in trouble for painting the cave (all over his poor Mum's paintings!) His parents warn him to be good or the mammoth will throw him to the big brown bear. That night he is carried off in the night by a mammoth. He is scared he'll be fed to the Big Brown Bear - until he realises all the mammoth wants is his cave decorated. Naturally, Cave Baby obliges and creates a pre-school masterpiece, much to the delight of the mammoths.

The illustrations are beautiful; they make the story leap from the pages and entrance my toddlers. My children love the Cave Baby himself especially but the prehistoric animals are utterly charming. I like how we met the real-life counterparts of his original cave painting as Cave Baby travels through the forest with the mammoth.

The rhyming tale is a delight to read aloud; it flows beautifully and creates a soothing story that is perfect for winding down with. It's particularly great that most of the story takes place at night.

It's a lovely way of introducing when and where it's ok to paint and reinforcing those no-drawing-on-the-walls rules with your little ones.

This is definitely worth a read; you and your little one won't be disappointed. It's a fun, whimsical tale.

I love this story and have yet to find a toddler that doesn’t. I have shared this book with my niece two and a half and a a group of 7 toddlers and they enjoy it every time. It s a story of a cave baby who finds paint and decides to paint his cave. His parents are not happy and clean it all away. A mammoth takes him for a walk and he thinks he is heading to a scary bear, but he is heading to another cave ( mammoth family) who encourage him to show his creative side and he had an amazing time drawing what ever he likes. Such a great story and one of my favourite Julia Donaldson books

Very similar style to other Julia donaldson books. Love the brave baby character who ends up having fun with the paint and the mammoth. The drawings are lovely where they go from dark to super colourful and you feel like the baby has made a  friend at the end. The boys love looking for the bear which is hidden on each page to. Great book.

A sweet little book about an adventurous cave baby who loves to paint! My daughter is going through a painting stage so she loves this book. The illustrations are lovely, and she loves pointing out what the different shapes are. Not my favourite Julia Donaldson, but nice nonetheless.

Despite the rhyming and the happy ending we didn't enjoy this book as we have done many of the other Julia Donaldson stories. I think it's mainly because my daughter found the dark pages and scary animals too frightening. She found the cave baby's parents a bit scary too. All in all, we may try it again when she's older.
