This new text uses readings to explore contemporary American social issues, the impact of technology, and how society might evolve in the future, to assist ESL students in acquiring the skills necessary to succeed in regular classroom settings. It prepares students for mainstream academic programs with high-interest, content-oriented readings. It presents a structured approach to help students develop skills in vocabulary building, understanding prefixes and suffixes, and drawing meaning from context, as well as understanding the structure and sequences of paragraphs. It offers higher-level skill activities to build skills in finding the main idea, understanding inferences and points of view, problem solving, and writing topic sentences. A section on reading tables, graphs, and other non-prose writing provides exposure to handling tabular material, math problems, bar charts, and other types of materials that students are frequently required to understand.
