James and the Birthday Balloon is an uplifting picture book, suitable for children aged 3-7. It follows on from the hugely successful James and the Amazing Gift (Matador, 2016). This time James is heading to the birthday party of his best friend Ruby.

During the birthday party, James and Ruby are given giant balloons by the entertainer. But Ruby lets go of hers and whilst chasing after it, hurts her leg and needs to go to hospital. She's scared because she doesn't know what to expect.

This is a reassuring story for any child faced with having to go to hospital, and how James saves the day with a small act of kindness and a smile that soon spreads throughout the hospital.

For every copy sold, GBP1 is going to raise vital funds to help support Evelina London Children's Hospital, which provides care and life-saving treatment for children in south London and beyond. Each copy of the book will also include a free audio recording of the story by TV's Dr Ranj Singh (CBeebies, ITV's This Morning).

This is a really nice book about friendship and being kind to others. James and Ruby are good friends and when it is Ruby's birthday party they are both very excited. They even get their own balloons each to hold. Unfortunately there is an accident and Ruby has to go to hospital but James visits her and does his best to cheer her up. The story gives some detail about Ruby's hospital visit and we found this very interesting. I think it would help young children understand that hospitals and their staff are there to help and to look after you. We have read the book a few times together and enjoyed this story. The next time we pick it up we are going to listen to the audiobook version linked in the book.

This was a really sweet story about friendship, and shows how friends should be kind to one another. Ruby ends up in hospital and her friend James tries to make her feel better. My daughter could relate to the hospital element of the story, as she had to go in for an operation. It is good for introducing the hospital to young children. The free audio book by dr ranj was a nice added bonus.

This is a great story of friendship. It came in particularly useful to our family as my youngest son is going into hospital for an operation so is explained all about the hospital to his older brother who is 3 years old.

I read this to my 4 year old daughter who really enjoyed it. She has had several trips to the hospital, so she really relates to the story. It was a lovely story of friendship that we will be reading often.

This is a really good idea for a children's book. Ruby and James are best friends and it covers what happens when Ruby breaks her leg at her birthday party.

However I found the idea of the book better than the execution. For me, the depiction of their friendship was on the sickly side of sweet. I particularly disliked the unnecessary description of the paramedic as "the lady paramedic" while the male doctor on the next page was just described as "the doctor". Overall, it just wasn't a terribly exciting book to read. I read it to my daughters twice and they haven't asked me to read it again so they haven't found it particularly engaging either.

I have given it 3 stars as it is for a good cause and the free audio download read by Dr Ranj is a nice touch.

This is a nice book which is a great story of friendship. It would be really useful to help prepare a child for a hospital visit however when reading it with our daughter, who has not yet had any experience of hospital, it worried her a little but it was a good catalyst for us to discuss hospitals in general. The book looks and feels more like an educational book than a story book which is a shame as the story is good. The free audio is an unexpected and welcome bonus.
