Being a super special secret agent is challenging enough for any top spy but it’s even more tricky when you’re a teeny tiny spider. However small details like these don’t get in the way of this intrepid investigator. Her latest mission is to prevent any party pandemonium when Tom Webster’s birthday cake is under threat from a deadly enemy, code name Bluebottle. It’s time to pack her spy-kit with all the essentials binoculars, a disguise, a top-secret laser pen and not forgetting of course every secret agent’s secret weapon……..a flask of tea! It’s a race against the clock as time is ticking away, will Spyder save the day and the party before it’s too late?

Bursting with bravery and bugs ‘Spyder’ is an energetic and entertaining read, that is bound to delight younger readers. Matt’s distinctive style seen in the fabulous ‘Superbat‘ is evident, his use of  a vibrant but limited palette creates a bold, stylish book which has a vintage feel that I really love. It offers a unique mix of different layouts and spreads that make it visually intriguing and appealing.  The danger Spyder faces being so small, lends itself to lots of perilous but comic moments which is captured brilliantly in the perspective used in the illustrations. It’s refreshing to see a female cast in the role of secret agent because as we know girls (even arachnids) are more than capable of being crime-busting crusaders. For lovers of thrills, spills and peril Spyder is a humorous and exciting read.

Sophie is starting to get a great of spiders (something I didn't want her getting from me). We sat and re-read this book together this morning. "I like spiders now" was her response. Secret agent Spyder (with a lot of James Bond remarks) saves the day and defeats the evil blue bottle fly. We read this book eith a lot of drama. We sat and talked about how good spiders are against pesky germy fly's and it had a really positive influence. Perfect.

This is a really nice book. The illustration are modern and colourful and the story itself is good. As the title suggests it is about how a spider secret agent saves the day. Nice book to read at bedtime!

We were very intrigued by the idea of a special agent 'Spyder' and we weren't disappointed. This book is fantastic! It has some amazingly colourful illustrations drawn from many different perspectives. We really got a spider's eye view of the world and loved it. The story itself focuses on special agent Spyder - a female secret agent who is sent her assignments by Miss Money Spider. Her current mission is to save a birthday cake and party from an unexpected and unwanted guest whose code name is Bluebottle. Spyder sets out on a daring mission to outsmart Bluebottle and save the cake and the day. Just like any secret agent Spyder has lots of spy gadgets and useful things to take with her. She has a laser pen, different disguises, binoculars and lots more to help in her daring mission. Children will love the fun and adventurous story with action scenes taking place in the bathroom, the kitchen and even under a sock amongst other places. Adults will enjoy the links in the story to the James Bond franchise (Miss Money Spider being just one of many). Our whole family enjoyed this book immensely and we are now on our own mission to find more stories by Matt Carr.

A very fun book which we enjoyed a lot. We love this author's previous boos Superbat and so we're keen to read this one.
008 has a new mission, to save the birthday cake from being ruined by Bluebottle the fly. A fun twist on a very normal event. My daughter enjoyed all the plays on words that we talked about and loved how the fly was caught in the end. Great book.

A charming tale about a spy who happens to be a spider and has to save a birthday cake from Blue Bottle the fly.  There are some nice touches of humour for the adults in a James Bond kind of way (008, Miss Money Spider etc) and the story is simple enough to appeal to even younger kids, making it a perfect bedtime story.   The illustrations are bright and bold and hopefully it may save a few kids (and their parents) from fearing our eight legged friends!

My daughter loved this book right from the title. I think it's a great book for children who are maybe not so keen on spiders- shows that they are very busy trying to help. The illustrations are really bright and interesting.

This was such a fun story about a secret agent called Spyder, who is on an action-packed mission to save a birthday cake. Leo loved all of the bold illustrations and the comic book style layout. He thought Spyder in the upside down glass was really funny. There were some interesting spider website facts at the end too.

I loved Matt Carr’s début picture book, Superbat, and his second book, Spyder, is also brilliant. I’ll admit that when I saw the cover I presumed that secret agent Spyder was a boy (). I was pleasantly surprised to discover that Matt had cast a female spider in this daredevil role. The story follows Spyder on one of her top-secret missions. It’s Tom Webster’s birthday and his cake is under threat. There’s an evil villain on the loose. It’s up to Spyder to stop Bluebottle and save the day (and the cake). The story has it all: peril, daring escapes, special gadgets, disguises and traps.

It’s great fun and very funny. Children will chuckle at the witty puns and wordplay, and those who are familiar with the genre will love all the references to James Bond too: codename 008, Miss Money Spider, and the family’s address of 7 Fleming Road.

Aside from the humour, the book is also a visual treat. Matt is a graphic designer and this clearly influences his style. Matt’s use of bold primary colours is really striking and eye-catching. I also love how pages are divided with strong lines, giving the book a bit of a comic book feel.

My favourite illustration is right at the back of the book, after the end papers, and I missed it the first time I read the story. It’s hidden away – a bit like those extra scenes you get at the end of a film after the credits have started rolling. I won’t tell you what it is, because that would give the book’s ending away and it’s a great final twist, but it’s well worth looking out for. There are some cool spider-related facts at the back of the book too.

Spyder is another picture book hit for Matt Carr, who’s fast becoming one to watch.
